If you've gone through 3 power cords, it's probably the connection to the laptop that's the problem (unless you're tripping over the cord). Unfortunately, it's likely that the main board in the laptop (motherboard) has a loose connection.

Or, if you have had the laptop for more than 2 or 3 years, the battery may be going out. That's cheaper, but check with your folks about this.

You aren't using a block splitter for the cord are you? I mean, 3 or more in the same socket as the laptop. The connection to the laptop can be determined by wiggling (technical term) the connection at the back of the laptop. If the power/charge is working intermittently, you have a loose connection to the board and need it re-soldering.

Its because you have a dell. That is all. Get a HP/Compaq

I used to have a Dell Inspiron laptop, I forget the exact number/model though. It always ran extremely slow for some reason, and the life of the battery was terrible. :(

I've since gotten an HP Pavilion dv5z (I think it's a z?) and it's been extremely reliable... really happy with the purchase. :)

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60-418DX running Windows Vista Home Premium and Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope. I've had it for a few weeks and yesterday I got the thing connected to our wireless network.

No Dell laptop or Dell desktop. I hate the design and will never get one.

We have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop & a Dell Mini. Our 3 desktops are homebrewed.

You should not have so much of a problem with your ac adapter. I would suggest a good surge/spike protector.

If that is your only computer, it may be worth getting a new adapter. The cheapest adapter I found with a quick search on the web is about $40 (includes shipping) www.atbat.com ..

I also have a handed down Dell notebook. Dell may not be the of best quality but I don't think it's crap either. If you had gone through 3 adapters in such a short time, there's definitely something wrong.
