Java is a common beginner's language, and a good choice because it runs on most platforms (every major operating system as well as Windows, as my CS prof would say). For whatever reason Linux people seem to like Python a lot.

Its libre software, whereas Java has some issues.

Sun has been moving to open-source Java, and the components which are not fully open-source yet are being rewritten and replaced. As long as I see something moving in the right direction, I'm willing to support it.
