So I've been looking at linux server programs, for a home network server. It seems that samba is the best out there, but s there any way to do automatic backup's from a windows machine without any extra software? Thanks.

just set up a samba share on your shared storage server and in your windows machines configure them to back up a set of directories to the shared storage. You can use various methods for configuring this backup but windows has an automatic backup system in it's accessories where you can schedule a backup job every so often.
