I was just looking around on my drive and I came across some wallpaper pictures I want to delete from my Acer notebook, and an error message popped up to let me know I need some kind of "permission" from "Trusted Installer"!

Can you believe that?!

I own this machine, and "Trusted Installer" will either catch on to that fact or get fired.

But, I just read some stuff about that, and there are updaters and other things that will not work as they should without the "Trusted Installer" service running ...

So, how can I get control of my machine without messing up the stuff *it* needs to be able to keep itself going?

Fuzzy: My drives for my Systemax just arrived, and now the thought of taking Win7 completely out of this Acer in favor of Mint is rolling around in my mind ...

You may own the machine, but M$ owns your soul. Get linux, get your soul back. ;)

Too right, sudo pwn -rf Trusted\ Installer would fix that nonsense in a jiffy. I think you can do something similar (with a couple of reboots, and at least one BSoD) by enabling the Adminstrator account http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/lo ... nistrator/

Wow, too cool! You just made my day, friend!!

It only took me a minute to get my Favorites hooked to my new task bar, then I easily suffered the IE8 warmup drill ... and now I shall never again be in the second chair on *this* machine!

Thank you.

Okay, that got me in as Administrator, but I still cannot get past "Trusted Installer" to delete some Wallpapers in the Windows Web folder ...

??

I am guessing (I don't have Windows) that the files are owned by the Trusted Installer user or group. If you right-click on the problem files (and possibly on the folder containing them) then there should be a Security tab in Properties. Under the Advanced setting you should be able to change the owner to the group Administrators. Then you can (hopefully) delete it when logged in as Administrator.

Can you delete it in safe mode? (You still need to use that right click command, which is just an automated takeown + cacls as StuartN suggested)

I just tried the right-click "Properties" action as full Administrator to remove "Read Only" from the folder and files in question and I thought that had gone through ... but when I tried "Delete" I was again told I needed permission from that !#$^T "Trusted Installer"! And of course, deleting those files is not the real issue here. I just want to do what I want to do! And, that is one nice thing about a multi-boot system: When one tyrant says "No", you can just smile and walk away and go on around the barn and use a different door!

No, I had not thought of safe mode, but that would be even sneakier than multi-boot and I do have principles, you know!

Well, another way is to disable UAC all together. That way administrators behave like they used to be in pre-Vista. If you have used limited account in 2000/XP, that shouldn't be a problem. The only thing you miss is IE protected mode and files/registry redirection for pre-Vista programs.

I will just leave things as they are for now. This has been a big day and right now I would be too likely to click in a wrong spot.
