I'm starting to program with code::blocks, I have tried visual C++. I find them both annoying. Do you have any suggestions? Please keep in mind: open source or at the worst 30 day trial. I'm looking for C/C++ compiler.

Well, everyone has different needs, but I personally don't like IDEs very much. They are too slow and bloated for my taste. I have used both Visual Studio, XCode, and JGrasp. A few months ago I switched to Vim, and I haven't gone back since. I use Vim for my programming environment and gcc for my compiler.

YES, once you start righting code in vim you will never be able to use anything else!

As far as compilers go, Microsoft's compiler is really good in terms of optimizing your code for size or speed, and you can use it from the command line instead of having to deal with visual studio.

I'd say go with PC-BSD or Mepis if you have a desktop. For a Laptop, Fedora 12 works well, at least with my equipment.

You can get perl, BASH, emacs and have as much fun as you want... for free ! !

I'm sure there's an open-source COBOL compiler out there somewhere...;)
Check Sourceforge, they're likely suspects for compilers...

kidding..;)

Cobol ! !

People still use that.

Generally, perl is a very friendly programming language. It is offered in a wide variety of UNIX and Linux distributions. There might even be a version for Windows as well, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Hi. One word: PYTHON!
its the language they use for freshmen at MIT, because its fun, relevant, and you can build real things quickly.
And yes, VIM rocks.

yeah, Python can be downloaded as a helper program; I know that Blender and Poser (3d graphics programs) rely on them a lot. I'm sure there's free compilers for them.

Gimp has switched from using a variant of scheme to python for writing plug-ins and filters.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding here, but I thought the OP was asking about compilers, not programming languages?

I thought he was asking for a programming environment for C/C++. The obvious choice for a compiler would be the GNU C compiler.

Ne'er let a good off-topic get side tracked by the truth.
