My mac shuts itself down randomly . It appears to be random, at least.

A message appears "you need to switch off the power and restart your computer ". You get this Red Screen.

This might not happen for weeks and all runs smoothly . But when it does it tends to do it repeatedly until whatever it is causing it " clears".

What causes this?

The Mac is ancient. It does everything I want, except run consistently. I don't want to spend money buying a new one at the moment. I'm injured and have to watch my savings.

It's not a big problem it occurs every now and then a bit like a stim.

Desktop

I'm on Tiger OSX 1.4

I put a huge printer next to it and it needs a software rip. Apart from that its "normal".

One other thing that is also driving me nuts is this message comes up -network spyware has expired and I can't find the file to get rid of it.

My hybrid-NT offspring have offered I should buy a new computer. However this is not necessarily objective advice as they might be thinking of the benefit of a new computer to themselves and "borrowing" this old one for whatever use they can put it to. You have to evaluate them like this.

so is this network spyware thing something you installed a while back? if so you can re download it and in the installer there should be an option to uninstall.

so the screen goes red
does it display this text also?

What type of mac is it?
you could try asking at macrumours or the apple duscussion board.

Thanks computerlove I will start looking for trojans with anti- virus . Where are the best files to look.
It won't scan the whole hard drive in one go , so you need to tell it where to start looking.

And thank you ,Conan that is the red screen as depicted in the link you sent.
