Hi, I'm trying to make an avatar for this site from one of my pictures on my machine. The thing is, I'm a new mac user and I can't figure out how to shrink a photo via iPhoto and make sure it's actually small enough to not exceed the MB limit. I know it's probably super simple, but I've already accidentally ruined one picture because I was playing with the edit function and didn't realize I wouldn't be able to NOT save the editing I did. So I'd rather someone just instruct me before I ruin any more.

I'm not a mac user, but advice for editing photos starts with this: open your picture and then immediately save it as a different file name. This will preserve the original.

I'll have a look at I-photo later. Have to go to paint some houses. I don't use IP for anything else other than getting the images "in" off the camera. I remember its got a cropping tool ,but that's only for "cutting out the bits you want."

Quick question : Do you have anything like Photoshop?

I found Toy Viewer the ideal app for this job:

iPhoto ect are far to complex for the simple task of resizing and changing format of a bitmap image.

you can revert to original:

in topmenu: Photos > Revert to Original

or

right-click on the photo and select > Revert to Original

to resize photo...

right-click on photo thumbnail in album... choose: Show File

this will show the file in finder.

right-click on file > Open With > Preview... and in the app go Tools > Adjust Size ... and then "Save as" ..... give new name... done.

I would use GIMP for what you're talking about. It's a bit easier to use than PS in my opinion, and since it works on both Linux and Windoze, you ought to be able to find a version for mac.

If the photo is already as you want it visually, in iPhoto go to File -> Export... and select Size, Custom, then set Max: dimension to 100 px. You could set Max: width or height if you prefer. (I used Kind JPEG, Quality Medium, Filename: Use filename). Then the file save dialogue will let you choose a place to put it, such as your Desktop. The original photo is not altered.

Don't use iPhoto. Open the image in Preview (that's the default application for opening images), then go to the Tools menu and select Adjust Size.
