Would you take a lower paying job than your current one? The good thing is you'd be free by 2pm, having almost the whole afternoon free for your own projects?

Ha. I don't make enough as is, unfortunately. But, I do have time to pursue special interests. :-P so i am lucky, i guess. Do you need more time for yours?

Hell yeah I would…. Actually I just got a job offer for a lower paying job at a big engineering firm. I’ve worked at a smaller and quite more esteemed firm, but I got tired of the extensive traveling and stress that was associated with that company. “I had no life” I quit 6 months ago and screwed around for awhile until I ran out of money. I just sent out an application to the big corporate firm and just got a call yesterday. They pay a little less but I get to go home everyday, and I can work part time if I want so I can still screw around when I’m off. Now I may have time to do what ever I need to do and still have some income. :)

I've tried that but the employers won't believe that I really want it. They believe that I'm just asking for a lesser-paying job until I can find something better. They won't hire me at a lesser salary, and they're not offering full salary.

The only time I did it was when I worked secretarial temp for agencies. I worked 2 weeks in every month. I lived in a basement apartment and had no credit card bills. It was wonderful, especially since it was summer. Eventually, I felt too footloose, it can get to you not ever knowing where the bathroom is and where the photocopier is and where the "On" button is on the equipment. So I settled down and took a permanent job.

I will choose to answer "no" because most days I could take off by 2pm if I wanted to.

That, and I really can't afford to take less pay.

As a rule, less pay to be happier is a good deal IF you can get by okay on the lower paycheck.

Having a good steady job means you're free to have a life ... something to do during the day, and money to do what you like the rest of the time.

If only more autistic people were in work, our problems would seem so much less troublesome.

Everyone respects money, even if it's a slightly eccentric person's cash.

Absolutely I would. Money doesn't make as much difference as people think, unless its a BIG drop or increase.....you always seem to live within your means, and you can't put a price on free time.

I used to do technical drawing for a few different engineering firms, and was on a good whack for this part of the world and my age....but I was unhappy and didn't get on with any of the old timers.

I quit and went back into education....I'm poor but happy. I want to start a little business in the spare room doing old & rare Polish / horror / vintage / Japanese film poster repros as well as framed canvas artwork of friends and my own. I doubt I'll make mush money, at least at first, but I will be doing something I enjoy and have a stack of free time!! !! All i need now is a loan, has anyone got a few grand they could lend :D

I would happily take any job at all at the moment. I've been unemployed for 2 months. But I never earned more than minimum wage. If I could earn that AND stop at 2pm I would be really happy because I could have more time with my kids. Anyone want any work done that I could do over an internet connection? I used to check genetics data and transcribe phone calls for speech recognition projects. I'm very self-disciplined - just don't ask me to talk on the phone.

The best way to make a living is with your special interest,
or as NT would say, mix business with pleasure.

For us, we need good friends with people skills and other
business skills as partners and peers to accomplish that.

That is also good for the economy because we are passionate
about our work. I am unable to split my life into work and not work,
so it has to have meaning for me. I am also intrinsically disruptive
to hierarchies so I cannot do formal or conformal work
, but I can
do interesting and productive work. I consider being on WP
as "volunteer work" because I think sharing my experience is good
and I think I give more than I take. I have learned a little and tried to
help a lot here. I hope people understand what I say the way I think it,
and I hope I have been helpful.

If you've been laid off, it's not a question, it's a fact. You will work for less...

We're shutting down a rather unprofitable, but time consuming, part of the company by the end of the year. After that is gone, I will have much more time available and will be in a much better position to do much of my work from home and may only need to come to the office two or three days a week and only for a few hours then.

For the same pay.

I'll also do some work from home.

If I only had to work from 8am to 2 pm and still got medical benefits, 401k, etc? Yes.

But at the company I work for right now, that would be less than 40 hours per week, so you don't get medical benefits, and other things.

If I could leave at 2 pm I could go biking or pick up the kids after school.
