There is an eight year old Aspie next house to where I'm working. Usual NT parents feeling socially embarassed what do we do etc. etc. I told them I though is was great news they had an Aspie, and they actually responded positively to this. His parents are still thinking inside box about him, hence don't really get it, trying to make him do too much NT stuff. ( Haven't said this just assessed.)

Kid is eight years old ,he's an image recall Aspi with near photographic memory for film scenes. I haven't said anything but I thought he might like some software for making films / animations. Any free trials/ freeware he could try out?

Thanks.

If they have a Mac, they should already have iMovie on there. iMovie '08 or above is very good.

Eight is a bit young for some of this software, but since some of it is free, it doesn't hurt to throw it at the kid and see if it sticks.

www.blender.org Blender is 3D animation software which, while quite sophisticated and difficult to learn, has the advantage of being free and can run on Windows, OS-X and Linux

www.gimp.org GIMP is a free photoshop like program. Again, it is available for all platforms.

Here is some animation software that is specifically for kids:

ToonBoom etc Some of the ToonBoom products are, while not free, inexpensive enough and geared toward kids that they might be ideal for a kid (or adult) who likes animation. ComicBoom might also be a good idea.

More Links:

Wikipedia listing of Open Source Video Software This has links to a number of programs. I haven't used any of these and cannot vouch for them, but they might be worth looking into.

Trial software can be very frustrating. There is a good comparison page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... g_software

Stop motion animation (for example http://stopmotion.bjoernen.com/ on Linux) might appeal to some kids.

Archive.org has publicly licensed content.

Thanks I'm going to go down and see them, - ( got him to shake my hand today, even held it for a for a few moments- empath- gentle touch )

All looks good. Remember

Stuart how difficult would Linux be to install on a PC if you don't really know what you are doing?
Sorry - statement is a measure of two parts of an unknown .
A) Ease of installation
B) Capacity to install

Depends on the distro. The mainstream ones like Ubuntu aren't too hard though.

Yes, Ubuntu is easy. Download the CD image from http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download, burn it with whatever CD burning software you have and then boot from it. It asks some questions about location, language and whether to replace the existing operating system or shrink and install beside it (dual boot).

btw the boy could even use a cheap digital camera and make stuff taking some pics or recording a movie with it.
