Hey, I need help. Ideas and concepts are just a mess for me. I need a nice program that helps me keep track of these things. I'm currently designing my own application that will do this, but if such things already exist I'd like to know about them (so I don't have to go through all the work and all).

So plz put the names of any applications in here if they help you out with academics.

For me, I use
::Outlook::
I use outlook's lists to archive all my vocab words. I create "Task List Items" which work the same way that nodes work on a TreeView display (where you can expand/ minimize the nodes... see NodeCase). I really like the outlook thing I have going now because it has a search feature (I can search for "pre*" if there's a word at the tip of my tongue that I can't recall, but I think it starts with that latin root). I used to like the way that I could check off the words from my list once I had them memorized well... but the list is so big, I don't really have to to memorize the things anymore... I've gotta work something out here for myself.

::google calendar::
I go through all my syllabus hand outs and record all my test dates (color coded by class they're in). I also put h/w assignment due dates in there too. There's a ToDo list in google calander too, but I forget to use it often, and when you're like me, you're always working on something in your todo list so there's less point in making a list (if I have time to put something on the list, I usually do that thing right after and you know...).

::google docs:: (a tiny bit..)
I use google docs to organize some of my notes. This is awesome because I can access my notes from any computer with internet. It's bad because I don't think I should trust google nearly as much as I do. Also the formatting is yucky. I have a google doc file called "inventions" which just grows and grows, and it's relatively easy to navigate to. I have another relentlessly growing file on there named "Good Ideas" where I put education concepts that I come up with randomly. I have a few random projects I'm working on and ideas come to me, often while I'm in the middle of doing something else. Google docs helps me save these thoughts. The documents are sorted by there recency of use which is EXCELENT!

::A Flash card program + Portable media device:: (I got one on my ipod touch.. I don't wanna advertise it though cause it's relatively difficult to obtain freely.) When I go number two I cruise through my flash cards and commit the dumbest simplest things to memory that regular people seem to not have issues memorizing. I'd like to rig it up to do my vocab words, but I need to build an interface with outlook for it first.

...that's about it for me as of now, plz help by adding to this list: "Things that assist with academics" just dropping the name is enough if you don't have time to describe it and all that jazz.
=D

Thx all in advance

I like Freeplane (branch of Freemind). Its a brain storming program you could use with other tools on that list to help you succeed. Just google, wiki, or youtube it.

I find it funny that the only advice you two are giving him is with grammar, not with computer programs to help him.

Parley (or KWordQuiz for a different layout) are excellent flashcard programs, with a lot of useful files available http://edu.kde.org/parley/

I use NoteCase for organizing random thoughts, but I think gNote is really taking off http://live.gnome.org/Gnote - I can't cope with the really featureful brainstorming packages and just want hierarchical notes.

I have been using my phone camera more recently - to photograph whiteboards, letters, serial numbers and so on - then upload the pictures into gThumb where I can name and catalogue them, or type up the full text.

I'm in a career involving world affairs and concepts/systems.

Sorry about that typo, I'm on an ergo keyboard and sometimes the keys at my right hand come down late.

yes, WP is full of grammar nazis
BTW, don't know if you noticed, I asked him what's his background/career, so I could give a much better and more thoughtful recommendation.

@Snaps, it was a joke (:
So world affairs and concepts/systems.. :scratch: *starts to think*

I like the irony of the subject! :)
