Must see this (optical?) image........... 8O
It's not the content, but the presentation:

http://dillsnapcogitation.wordpress.com ... of-terror/

To quote Marine Corp General James N. Mattis, "PowerPoint makes us stupid." The site makes reference to "PowerPoint Rangers." You've got to see it to belive it. Then, in paraphrase:

Quote:
“It’s dangerous because it can create the illusion of understanding and the illusion of control,” General McMaster said in a telephone interview afterward. “Some problems in the world are not bullet-izable.”

“I have to make a storyboard complete with digital pictures, diagrams and text summaries on just about anything that happens,” Lieutenant Nuxoll told the Web site. “Conduct a key leader engagement? Make a storyboard. Award a microgrant? Make a storyboard.”

The news media sessions often last 25 minutes, with 5 minutes left at the end for questions from anyone still awake. Those types of PowerPoint presentations, Dr. Hammes said, are known as “hypnotizing chickens.”

Is this a contest??? Who can stare at this seizure-inducing spaghetti of a presentation longest? I dare you. No, I doube dare you. With a side of clonazepam. MAKE IT STOP.

Hypnotizing chickens indeed. To the point, these are government battle plans. How is that slide instructive? And which side are we on? I forgot. Feeling suggestible yet? Seasick?

Someone needs a nap. Then their PowerPoint privileges taken away.

Quote:
.........“When we understand that slide, we’ll have won the war,” General McChrystal dryly remarked.

Where's that fainting couch?

I saw the slide a while back.

It is amazing how people think you can solve any problem systematically by drawing up a diagram. While a systematic approach is good, it doesn't work if you make it artificial. In real life situations, especially not an enormous strategic concept like "Afghanistan Stability", you can't just draw arrows between titles, because as is displayed here the whole diagram loses its purpose.

I imagine the same information could be conveyed much faster and better on maybe one and a half pages. A nice, simple read is often better than a colorful diagram.

I love how they like to blame the tool for the human not doing the job properly. PowerPoint can only be as effective at communicating ideas as the idiot designing the slide.

Agreed. If one is going for the visuals, then let's GO ALL THE WAY!! ! 8)
Personally, I am blaming the tool.
We need mood music to accompany that PowerPoint presentation. The appropriate choice:

Just sayin', but Powerpoint actually can use background music.

Regarding power point I would say when it comes to a confusing slide that "nobody does it better"

Yes, if the generals have the war figured out, how come the Taliban runs circles around us when they're bored, and has relocated their entire infrastructure to Pakistan, and is currently conquering that country instead of Afghanistan? ... (scuffling in background) I'm being arrested! Help!...

We will rescue you as soon as we have created the powerpoint diagram that describes the escape plan. To speed things up we will probably just re-use the Afghanistan Stability/COIN Dynamics slide with a few name changes. Trust Us, we know how to diagram.

In my experience, it's not very reliable at doing so. YMMV.

I'm putting in my vote for "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor or Bonnie Tylers "Holding out for a Hero". :P

:D Love those theme music selections to enhance the PowerPoint experience! 'Eye of the Tiger,' Bonnie Tyler's song, and Carly Simon (cool video clip): :thumright:
Yeah, looks as if the Taliban has us one-upped. But, on our behalf, we have PowerPoint Rangers. I'm liking 'Mission Impossible' too : : Coin Dynamics.
