Who knew?

Grabbed a rose for my gf (was drooping due to storm damage last night), take it up to her.

We're talking, and I see a little bug on the side of a glass near the rose... but it doesn't set off any "dangerous insect/spider" alarms in my head (we have brown recluses here) so I get closer.

Little dude (maybe this big [---]) turns, eyeballs me, and starts swaying side to side like he's sizing me up.

Turns out the adults do the sway too, I assume to gauge distances, as after I let the nymph go on a bush outside, I got up close and acted like a predator at him. He turns calmly, sways, and hops to another leaf.

I totally agree with you. Katydid nymphs are cute. We also have a bunch of them in the front garden of our house. I've seen them grow up over the seasons. Insects are just really interesting, aren't they?
Btw, those are really good quality pictures. How did you get such big close ups?

Just google images search, my new tab page on IE is google images: http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi, so it's always at my fingertips.

Oh, and yes, insects, like all life, is quite fascinating up close, and upon observation.
