It's called good business practice. If a product was built to last, the company wouldn't make as much money. Planned obsolescence is embraced by all consumer product manufacturers.

Yes. Think of all those products that Apple enthusiasts have been buying for the last few decades. Apple's marketing philosophy is based firmly on people with more money than sense, who will swallow the line that paying more makes them more important.

I think rather than it was an under served market for 20 years. I'm not seeing any technology even vaguely indistinguishable from magic.

Innovation? No. More like they are finally overcoming decades of procrastination. Also, I bet a big chunk of that is the iphone app store product, which means its innovative users rather than Mother Corp™.
