I've recently purchased a new gaming laptop (and I'm quite excited). I've already cleaned out the unnecessary installs and removed the partition, and installed a few of my favorite games. This will become my primary computer; however, I do not want to much redundant data, so I suppose my desktop will become a giant hard drive/streaming video background noise player.

I had a number of software programs on the desktop for everything from security software to media dowloads, and since I have the chance to start fresh, I'd like opinions on the best (free) options to set up my laptop. Which security software? What torrent programs? What other software will help me to maximize the potential of my beloved laptop?

Just lists of which, and why. Thanks!

i would recommend ZipGenius for unzipping files. BitTorrent for torrents. And OpenOffice to replace Microsoft office.

I would recommend Linux if you weren't a gamer.

Security-wise, Firefox+Adblock Plus and NoScript are essential. Any decent free anti-virus is fine. I used Panda Cloud when I had a Windows install; I've heard good things about MSE.

I think µtorrent is the standard torrent program on Windows. I've always used Transmission.

Actually, I think GNOME Office is significantly better, especially given that OpenOffice's future is very uncertain right now. You can download AbiWord as a replacement to MS Word, and Gnumeric as a vastly superior alternative to Excel.
