Basically i am only interested in the green part, which is a microphone and amplifier. I want to use this to pick up the sound of something hitting water and close a circuit for a remote camera flash. The flash device has its own charger and would connect in place of Q2 but it only has two leads. Normally a tethered switch is closed to fire the flash. Should I just connect to the top of C3 and bottom of C4 and ditch everything in red?

Yes, you don't need the stuff in red--that is just the radio transmitter. But, connecting C4 would short out the signal at C3. The gain of the circuit is somewhat low--it is designed to be linear to faithfully reproduce the signal. The circuit I found has a high gain amp that doesn't worry about accuracy.

Yeah the one you found isnt that much more complicated if I leave out the mode select switch and its LED and inductor. I've an IR led and detector for it, but I wonder if I could do without?

Yes, build it without the IR detector. Electronics is best built in small assemblies--build and test, then add to it when you are satisfied with the performance of what you have already built. Tossing together too much and hoping it will all work is a recipe for failure.
