off the bat i can see it used in
robotics, car anti collision sensonrs, home automation, industrial pressence sensors...no dobt many others

there is a reward for hacking the neoto range finder
though there are a coulple issues
1. you can only get it with the robot at a price of 400, the reward is only 300
2. the slip ring has only 1000 hrs of run time
