I am primarily into stock mutual funds right now. I would buy investment real estate too if I had the chance. I will say it this way. There is a K-Mark Blue Light special on right now in stocks and real estate. Meantime, metals (gold in particular) are a bubble that is going to burst and when it does, most people again will lose money.
Money is made at the time of purchase, not at the time of sale.
What mutual funds?
While I do think commodities in general will fall if China goes into a recession, I don't see gold crashing anytime soon. The rate of CPI growth is low right now because demand is low and the markets are clearing, but inflation is already here. There will be an increasing demand for gold as the US and China continue mercantilist currency devaluation policies.

What software do you use?
I just use my online broker's website (TradeKing) and google finance.
