I just learned that I am to be the fortunate recipient of a very generous gift for the holidays, an Apple iPad (yay!). So now the question is, what case to get for it? I've spent the last few days researching quite a bit and so help me it seems like every case has something wrong with it - most look like they do little to protect the ipad (especially the screen) and/or look flimsy when they prop the iPad up at an angle to be used, or look like they'll fall apart on their own.

Anyone have an iPad? If so, do you have a case, and if so, which one? Are you happy with it?

Well I started out with the apple fold over case, but it was difficult getting the ipad in and out to put onto a dock.

Now I have a silicon case that just covers the sides and back of the iPad that I leave on all the time. To take the ipad from place to place I put it in an HP Mini Sleeve - Black with Red Trim
, it's actually designed for an HP Mini but fits an ipad pretty well and seems to offer a fair amount of protection with a fluffy lining.

Thanks for replying - I was thinking of going hard shell for the back / sides and a neoprene sleeve for travel but that starts to get pricey and it also doesn't offer any way to prop up the ipad on a stand - can buy a stand separately but most sleeves have no storage compartment for a stand and this costs even more money.

I really want to avoid anything with Silicone / rubber etc. as in the past when I put rubber / silicone cases on iPod's, over time the rubber gets sticky and if you remove the case the iPod remains sticky too. So having gone through that I don't want to repeat the experience with much more expensive iPad.

At this point I am 90% decided to get either an InCase Travel Kit Plus which includes a separate stand and compartments to store everything, and looks like it will do a good job protecting the device, or the InCase Field Bag which mounts the iPod inside and looks like it can sort of prop it up, and also has a small extra storage compartment - I saw this bag at the apple store and for sure it will protect the device.

Get an Otter Box. It's bulky and it'll add about 1/2" to the total dimensions of an iDevice, but it protects them like no other. My iPhone lives in an Defender series case and it's been to hell and back.

Yeah, the Otterbox looks pretty good but my hesitation with it is that I think(?) the part of it that actually touches the iPad is also made of silicone rubber (see my prev. post on why I want to avoid that).

I've been using the Apple case (I don't have a dock, so not an issue about getting it in and out), and a neoprene case meant for Netbooks that cost me $10 at Target for when I put it in my backpack or messenger bag. My mom picked up an Incipio case for hers, and that one's okay. Just be wary of cases with button clasps like my mom's has, if you absent-mindedly flip the cover closed, you may end up smacking the metal part of the button against the screen (not really a good thing to do....)

The part that touches the iPad is polycarbonate.

Get the Otter Box Defender case for it. Trust me, it's worth it.

It's not just rubber. It's a plastic shell encased in rubber. The rubber itself shouldn't be touching the Ipad (unless it doesn't follow the same design as every other defender).

Edit: I have some coming in soon and I'll report back to you on that.
