So my computer class has an old Dell server that right now works as an FTP for the class (sorry ppl who might want the URL.) Anyway my teacher wants me to convert it to do the following:
1)Make it able to let the other students to log-in from any of the terminals (except for the macs that I admin). We looked at it and it is saying to download and enable Active Directory. So how do I do that?

2) Make a webpage for the students so that they can also gain access to their own FTP files.

So please help me, cause i cant stand looking it up and finding the answer for 2003, 2008 servers. Also lookng on Micro$oft forums is something I DONT want to do again, they are worse then the Apple ones.

Win2k is unsupported. Your best bet is probably a software upgrade to Server 2003 or 2008- or, if you are feeling adventurous, to something like GNU/Linux or BSD Unix.

Server only made for Windows 2000? That makes no sense. If it has a sticker on it that says "Made for Win2k" or whatever... that doesn't actually mean anything.

Lack of CD/DVD drive is a problem. Do you have USB ports?

orwell there is no USB ports on it. So what should we do and would Red Hat 9 be good, or something else?

What does it have? Floppy drive maybe?

Red Hat 9 is ancient and unsupported. Debian 6.0 or CentOS 5.5 would be reasonable choices.

So... how does this computer interface with the outside world at all? Without USB, how are the keyboard and mouse even plugged in?

No optical drive, no USB, and not even a floppy drive... this truly must be a relic of bygone times.

This computer may have windows 2000 but may have been upgraded from NT 4. More information
such as specific model name might be helpful in advising you.

As for keyboards and mice, they probably use ps/2 mice and keyboards old but still pretty common.
