| Comcast Accused of Congestion By Choice
| from the i'm-completely-shocked dept.

An anonymous reader writes "A kind soul known as Backdoor Santa has
[0]posted graphs purportedly showing traffic through TATA, one of
Comcast's transit providers. The graphs of throughput for a [1]day and
[2]month, respectively, show that Comcast chooses to run congested links
rather than buy more capacity. Keeping their links full may ensure that
content providers must pay to colocate within Comcast's network. The
graphs also show a traffic ratio far from 1:1, which has implications for
the validity of its arguments with Level (3) last month."

Comcast is evil. I recently tried to drop one of their services and was told that I couldn't because I was under contract, which was total bullsh*t. I specifically shopped for a package without a contact when I originally became a customer of theirs. I called them on their bluff and got shifted around from one supervisor to another saying they were trying to find the documentation and/or call log to verify the supposed contract. Finally, they conceded and claimed they lost the file so I was off the hook.

No shady business practice of theirs surprises me at all. I just wish I had another viable option where I live.

I know one other company that have shady pratices

Verizon: have been cutting peoples DSL connections in the area that should have DSL and not leaving it alone, end up stopping sereval 100 feet laying Fiber for FiOS and telling those people that they are S O L and there out of reach of DSL and being stuck on Dial-up. Another thing is you can't go from FiOS back to DSL. There 4G LTE only having max 5GB a month and they want just sippers on there 4G LTE and they want people to use there landline services like DSL or FiOS but the people in the rural areas with only Dial-up or satellite internet areas get shaffted because that is no worst then being stuck on Dial-up or limited Satellite internet.

stuff like the cause the digital divide that is out there between places that can get or afford stuff like broadband, then there is the people that can afford it but can't get services like broadband.

Comcast is a lot better than frontier(the company Verizon sold out to in my area), the only alternative not involving a 56k modem. Also, I have no trouble running youtube or netflix videos. Maybe that's because I don't use HD or something, but the 3.5mb/s dl's from comcast are a hell of a lot better than frontier's 300-500k dl's.

Verizon is my area for landline is only offering 56k or there 3G data cards they don't want to upgrade so alot of people are stuck with Dial-up, satellite internet"Wildblue and Hugesnet", 3G most used Virgin Mobile 3G broadband2go"does over Sprint tower" and the tower is so bogged down in my area were there are somedays i can't even get over 10KB/s or 20KB/s and at night after 12AM i get over 200KB/s to 210KB/s.

then about 3% to 5% are the lucky ones to get Cable from Charter other then that the rest are getting stiffed and have to use Satellite or over the air for TV

That would be a bit hard because I am renting a room from my Mom and Step dad for $350 a month that is hard to do when I am in California.

Comcast intentionally slows down YouTube videos I watch, usually about 30-60 minutes at a time because they would rather have me sit in front of their worthless communist propaganda on a television. Oh and on totally related note their merger with NBC on a scale of 1-10 is a 12 on the conflict of interest meter.

Here is a video showing what they do...
