also, after the big 699MB download (which took forever), it's saying i need a disc burner.
the ubuntu site never even mentioned a disc burner. My netbook doesn't even have a disc drive
why the hell do i need a disc burner to download the OS to my pendrive :x ?!?!?!

The file you should have is ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso.

Go to this page and click "show me how" to put Ubuntu on the pen drive. They have a simple installer that will handle it for you.

The reason it tells you you need a disc burner is because .iso files are usually CD images, but Ubuntu Netbook Remix takes some minor (and now automated, thankfully) adjustments to run on a USB drive.

It would help if you mentioned what download you had gone for.

The instructions at http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook/get-ubuntu/download seem pretty complete, and don't require a CD burner. Where does it all go wrong?

(Near-)simul-posted with Orwell's above post... oops!

Oh... and PS. If you (sensibly) use NoScript, you need to allow ubuntu.com before the "Show me how" buttons will work.

If you have a USB flash drive you could install it using UNetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/).

yeah, that's the site i was using.
The "show me how" buttons work
but it's just that when i did step #1 (downloading that big file)
at the end of the download, my computer brought up all that dic burner crap and asking what i wanted to burn it to, instead of saving it :? . or something like that

Just ignore that and keep following the directions from "show me how." It should have saved somewhere, though I'm not certain where Windows puts downloaded files. If it hid it somewhere you can't find, download it by right-clicking the link and saying "save as..." and put it somewhere you can find.

okay, now when i try to download it, the server keeps resetting in the middle of the download.
possibly something to do with me using the college's network?
'cause i had no such problem downloading at my house.

Grrrr.... this is frustrating

also, out of curiosity, do i have to download the ISO file to my hard drive, or can i just download that to my pendrive too along with the the USB installer?

You could download to either, but I think both the installer and ISO image need to not be on the flash drive when you are installing the Ubuntu Linux to the flash drive.

The reason why your computer tried to burn the ISO to an optical disk is because you must have some disk burning software on your computer. If you didn't the computer wouldn't know what to do with it unless you installed a program.

Im guessing you managed to get both the recommended USB installer and the iso now. Im having the same problems with the server resetting - perhaps it didn't occur at home becausr the server didn't time out due to the faster connection [or cap on downloads at your college]

Let me know how you get on, just downloading ISO now on my netbook, going to try install it today.

Thanks,

Ben
