clip art question

I know, you are all going to laugh at me for this (a veiled reference to the movie 'Carrie') but I'm working on a web site and I've downloaded all this cool clip art - only it all downloads with a white background - I'm not wanting to color it all by hand since some of it is very detailed - and I may just change my web site background to white to save myself the trouble . . . but I really want green

BUT way back in the dark ages of computers when I used to do graphic design in high school there was a way to convert the background of a clip art to 'clear' - does anyone know how to do something like either in Windows Photo Editor, Yahoo web site design's program, or any other standard program that comes with Windows/Microsoft Office?

I've spent like an hour trying to figure that out and then I rememberd that I have access to one of the largest pools of good computer people on earth, so I thought I'd ask before I just give up and change the background color . . .

I'm afraid I don't know of an easy way. I normally select the image itself in PhotoImpact and paste it to a transparent background enlarging and cleaning up the edges if needed.

You might want to look into GIMP...it's free...and it can do quite a bit.
