All the potential is right there in the lithium based battery technology. It is light weight and can hold a large charge, meaning that trucks and cars could quite easily use it.

good engineering doesn't have to cost more than bad engineering. with today's technology, an affordable and practical all-electric car can be built, with sufficient range to rival gasoline, at least within a 200 mile range of home. cars can be made with fewer parts, and fewer parts means less complexity, less cost and less weight- less weight means less juice and less juice storage needed for a given speed and distance. it is about time that the internal combustion engine had some real competition, at least with around-town and town-to-town transportation. just my 2-cents' worth, not adjusted for inflation :)

Interesting article, however lots of ifs and buts. No mention of high efficiency ceramic engine blocks running on gasoline. Looks like they are going in the right direction. A solution could be a biological catalyst, making it a true hybrid. Good stuff.

Yes we could definitely see cars with less complexity with technology today. Would be a big plus. I also like the idea of using the body or 'shell' of the car, doors included as part of the battery as well. This creates the foundations of the car and holds charge. Good way to maximise the space and weight potential.

Efficiency is set to start increasing much more rapidly in the years to come and practical full spectrum solar panels are closer as well. It would be really cool if we could use this to power electric cars and store the charge. We'd need some sensors to avoid over charging but that is relatively simple.

adiabatic engines have not been investigated thoroughly by the "big wheels" - smokey yunick was onto something. also, in hot climes, solar cells [a mix of body-contoured flexible cells as well as hard cells] could be useful on cars and RVs.
