I'm sure there is some simple way around this problem, but I don't #&@!*(#!@&! want to have to figure it out! I shouldn't HAVE to figure it out.

I have a gmail account that is just for business. It uses my business name.

I have a different service for my personal, and have for years. That account is the one that became connected with my google "account" and I'm content with that.

But now I can barely log in to gmail, and cannot print from gmail, without them insisting I either change the google account to list my gmail as primary or create a second google account for the gmail account.

That is utter @!*(!& ridiculous. I don't CARE if I have a google account; I don't even know why I have it at all. I do NOT want the business name associated with internet activity, and I do NOT want to be signing in and signing out and never sure what I'm operating under.

Totally makes me want to QUIT gmail, as cumbersome as that will be for the business.

how large is the buisenss you do?
if large enough it might warrant a seperate email server at google, i set one up for the company i work for a couple of years back.
it allowed all workers to have a seperate email account not asociated with the "normal" gmail system so to speak.

if not you could look into account management software, that would make changing account a single click across all websites, i have never used any so i dont know if that is actually a safe option, hoefully someone here know some more about this subject.

If I'm reading your message correctly....Google is pestering you about creating a "Google" account to link to your business Gmail account?

But you already have a "Google" account, and it's tied to your separate, personal email?

That's just what Google does. They used to have separate accounts for Gmail, YouTube, Google,(The search engine), Google Checkout, Picasa, Google Calendar & all the other stuff under the "Google Umbrella". Once again, if I'm reading correctly, they only want you to make a Google account to tie in the Gmail address too. It's basically combining all of their services. (For example, you can "Log in" under Youtube, and when you go to Google search, or Picasa, or Gmail you're still logged in using the same account.

As far as I know, there's no way around this......since all their services are combined now. But, It shouldn't affect your work email. Just create & attach a Google account to your Gmail account & you're done. You'll continue using Gmail as you always have. The only difference being that you CAN (I.E., you don't have to) use that same account to sign into all the other Google stuff as well.

If you want to avoid having the business account tied to any internet activity, then simply log out when you're done using the business Gmail accountl. Nothing else will change. If you're unsure of which Google Account you're logged into, it usually shows in the top right part of your screen with a little drop down window you can use to log out.

I know it's probably not the answer you're looking for.....but there's no way around it since Google combined everything. On the bright side, nothing should really change since the only portion of the Google Account you'll be using is the Gmail section.

Thanks for the ideas. If my personal account was gmail it would be fine, but the business account is my name, and I don't use my name on the internet.

Oodain, the business is part-time occasional work I do under my own name. I also consult for other people, but that work is usually done with email addresses tied to their businesses. I have a LOT of email addresses!

All the consolidation these services are doing IS annoying. Turns out now anyone who has ever gotten an email from my personal account can access me on FaceBook, and I hadn't thought that through apparently when I structured things.

I'm terrible about remembering to do things like log out or switch browsers, but those are ideas.

Or, I clean up my emails and go back to running the business from my old mindspring account, which we had thought we would need to close when we switched internet providers but managed to keep anyway.

I confess, I am no techie. Thanks for being patient with me!

In some older browsers, I recall a menu option under "File -> Switch Profile", like some mail packages still have. Is there any simple add-on or accessible menu option in current browsers? Does this menu option (re)appear after running the profile manager?

as many others suggested i think the best thing would be to find some kind of profile feature, give me an hour or two and i will see if i can find something user friendly
software like this might come in handy.

Ditto that. I use a couple Gmail accounts. I have one forwarded to the other, but in the rare chance I need to log into it, I just pop another browser and continue. There might be a plugin out there to help you manage this, but unless it's published by Google, I won't be interested. Since Google and facebook and other providers are so monolithic, they have no problem with you combining business and pleasure on the same account. Unfortunately many people (including yours truly) prefer to keep them separate and the providers don't make it easy to do so. I wouldn't hold my breathe waiting for Google to come up with a plugin to make this any easier. Just use another browser for now.

no the file menu for profiles does not show up. it opens a window were you can make a profile or use one if you have one made. Yes this means command line fun but it works.
