Our Dell notebook ( wife's computer) has XP on a 300 latitude, and the problem is that there are blank spaces to where there would normally be a pause, and arrow >< icons, it just has the outline of the box there. (There is not an arrow inside the box.) It's operational when you mouse on it but you don't know what's there before hand.

And when checking out in online purchases, there seems to be a generic look to the page i.e. somethings' not all there.

Googled and found nothing. I reinstalled IE 8, cleaned the registry, and nothing.

This machine did this from day one, as it was used. One problem is the XP disc isn't available for a possible reinstall, if I needed to go there.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try FireFox or Chrome transfer it with Windows Share or a Flash Drive.

Don't use IE, especially if any of your online activities involve money (you said online purchase checkouts looked strange... using XP with IE to send your credit card information anywhere is begging to be robbed).

I also would not recommend Chrome on such a low-resource machine. Firefox is your best bet, or maybe Opera.

Back to basics! Have you tried to "Restore. Defaults" on the Tools-Internet Options-Advanced tab?

I had a similar problem a while back. The current values are retained in the registry even after a full uninstall and reinstall. It worked for me.

Blank spaces as in black? Or transparently blank?

I know that, in order to get rid of the blackness, you go to My Computer properties and you fiddle around with the "Adjust for best appearance" and "Adjust for best performance" and sh*t until the blackness goes away.

Otherwise, if it's a different issue, try what BassMan_720 suggested.

Sorry for the delay.

I tried restoring and nothing, and then copied the desktop settings as there were 5 or so differences and no effect.

Now, I'm on wrongplanet through this computer ( for the first time) and there seems to be a graphics problem.

There isn't the usual green/blue contrast between the posters.

All posters are white and there is not the 'moving ads' on the side bar .

There is green and blue on the WP logo, though.

I wonder if it's a Dell hardware problem? ( I did update the drivers, btw.)

Seriously, don't use IE. It's full of security holes that allow websites to install viruses on your computer without your consent. Chrome also has similar problems. If you want browser security you should be using Firefox or Opera (my personal favourite).

EDIT:

On a low resource machine like yours I'd use opera over firefox. Firefox is sluggish to start and load on my pc and I built mine for gaming! Even without the security flaws chrome is a no as it spins each tab (and extension) into a different process (which uses a relatively large amount of system resources).

Thanks all. Advice taken on I.E.

This Dell machine has 1 gig of Ram, 60g for C drive and 1.4gh processor. So then is firefox OK with this or will it dog?

I've run Firefox (well, Iceweasel, but it's the same thing) on an ancient machine with a 400 MHz processor and 320 MB of RAM. It will run and be usable, but it'll be a bit sluggish. Opera would probably be faster.
