I do. It would be cool to have a thread for strategies and predictions and such, so let's let that be this thread.

My current positions (my general strategy is to go long on commodities):

Long on:
Uranium: USU, URRE
Metals/Recycling: MEA
Lithium: LIT
Gold: CEF, GTU, and ANO (sold AAU today at a huge gain to buy ANO)
Nanoparticles: NANX (the only one I plan on holding long term for now).

Short on:
GLL (a gold shorting etf, haha)

So what stocks are you holding or watching?

If by playing the market, you mean short term buying and selling of what is in, then no I do not do that. If you mean long-term investing, then yes, I do that.

I am primarily into stock mutual funds right now. I would buy investment real estate too if I had the chance. I will say it this way. There is a K-Mark Blue Light special on right now in stocks and real estate. Meantime, metals (gold in particular) are a bubble that is going to burst and when it does, most people again will lose money.

Money is made at the time of purchase, not at the time of sale.

What software do you use?
I took part in an online competition a few years ago where we were given $10,000 virtual money and a month to make money on the stock market. I made $4000. I can't remember what the winner made but he more than doubled the original amount.

What mutual funds?

While I do think commodities in general will fall if China goes into a recession, I don't see gold crashing anytime soon. The rate of CPI growth is low right now because demand is low and the markets are clearing, but inflation is already here. There will be an increasing demand for gold as the US and China continue mercantilist currency devaluation policies.

I just use my online broker's website (TradeKing) and google finance.

I hold stocks. My picks at the moment are data storage, mobile data infrastructure (30% pa growth in turnover), ageing / disability consumer products, pharmaceuticals and (with care) investment banks. Plain stocks, no shorts, no day-trading.

i've always thought this would be interesting. What costs are involved beyond actually buying stocks? do you have to pay for transactions and how is that priced. Sorry i'm sure it is quite complicated but just a general answer is great :D good luck to your stocks!

I keep away from the stock and shares. I was going to get involved back in '07 when my mother was in, but the prices started going down and down.

I have zero experience of the markets, but I told her to take her money out and she did. Good one Craig, she would have lost all of her profit. Goes to show, that you don't need any experience to know when something is going tits up.

Due to UK interest rates, the majority of people prefer the markets so that returns are greater. I keep away, and even more so when every Tom, Dick and Harry is offering you "tips". Remember 1929, when everybody from top down was investing and how things folded? It could easily happen again. The people who survive will be the ones who get their money out in time and those who didn't bother investing at all.

Have fun with your downgraded non fortunes!

Craig28, if you were smart you would have advised your mum to short all those declining shares and make herself an even bigger profit ;)

Sorry, advice, real advice comes from banks and the like. I am not a financial guru.

Well a few years ago the banks would have told you to get a subprime mortgage...

I'm not sure what a subprime mortgage is, but I do know that the banks do not have people's interests at heart, so it must be a bad thing.

Subprime mortgages played a big part in the financial crisis. In fact, some argue they were the main cause. Though the way the banks were shoveling CDOs full of them onto each other was a bigger problem.

I could write a whole essay on this, but this is a forum and you evidently don't know too much about how the financial system works (and why would you, your money comes free from the government), so I'll just say that if you had a subprime mortgage like the banks were selling a few years ago, you may very well not have a house today.

You'd be wasting your time if you did write the essay.

You could tell me all day and all night about the stock market, and it would do nothing to make me invest. There is no money in it.
