It keeps freezing on me for several seconds. I'll just be switching sites or links and it won't respond.I'll try clicking some more and the screen will go white. I can't even close the window.

My wife has a bunch of crap coupon add-ons to firefox that I'm sure one of them is to blame. I just don't know how to delete them - just disable them.

If someone could tell me how to delete the add-ons, I'd appreciate it.

Tools|Addons, then select Disable or Uninstall for those on the list you're suspicious of.
This is for Firefox 3.6, but IIRC a similar option existed on the earlier versions. Actually, if you're not yet running it - now might be a good time to upgrade to version 5. It's considerably faster.

I am running 5.0 in 64-bit Windows 7, and it (Firefox) occasionally freezes a bit and needs to be coaxed into refreshing (or even closed and re-opened). That happens the most for me while at Hotmail, but I think that has at least partly to do with something about Hotmail.

^^ Seems likely to me (Hotmail and/or Windows).
I don't remember the last time Firefox misbehaved here, and although it has very occasionally frozen, it's only for a few seconds before a "misbehaving website script" dialog pops up, giving me the ability to kill the script or continue waiting for it to complete.

Firefox sucks. Chrome is the way to go, man. It hardly fails. Just download it.

I stopped using firefox about a year ago I was having problems like you were. Now I am using Safari - the new version is very stable and capable - also I think you will appreciate the interface, particularly the AppleOS like start page selection for your most often visited and or bookmarked sites. Chrome is unreliable but its the fastest. With chrome I had problems with video playback on youtube, also I would get errors for Java applications even though I had the correct plugin.

Internet Explorer has improved a lot too. Very stable and very quick.

I have heard IE9 is good, but I have yet to ever try it.

You can't go wrong with IE9, that's what I am using right now.

Firefox reminds me of Kirstie Allie. She was once so beautiful. Now look at her.

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder - fortunately, actual innovation and Open Source do not.
IE is and always has been the whining child carrying a loaded shotgun.

Maybe you should take that acid 3 test ;)

Webkit is best rendering engine IMHO. Khtml second.

I am rather undwhelmed by IE9. On my computer it is slow. So far Chrome has worked fastest and best for me.

the kirsty ally woman always seemed to me like she would have been a very hairy woman if she did not attend to shaving and plucking vigorously.

You made me laugh. Firefox was my Web browser (I never liked IE) UNTIL I started using Chrome. Now I cannot stand it. I still use it when I need a second browser (don't ask - working reasons), but Chrome is my favorite. Reliable and fast.

Who in their right mind would use IE? even IE9 *spits*

Well I use Firefox 6.0 on my desktop and Chrome on my laptop so I am pretty satisfied like both equally so I installed them both :D
