decent graphics card for games
starting off i don't want something crazy powerful, i have an ati radeon hd 5450 with 512 dedicated grahics memory.
and i can't run many games well. the reason i started to looking at this was because i saw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwsQICw-b3Y <- that. this person's dual core 2 gb ram computer can play dragon age better then mine, the only thing better in this one is the graphics card i have a phenom 2 945 quad core with 8 gbs of memory.
so the way i see it the graphics card is what i need for games, if i tried to play dragon age fullscreen at max graphics like that it would crash in 10 minutes that isn't an estimate that is what it does every time.
i don't have the money nor do i want to transfer all my files [which is about 100+ gigs worth just video and pictures alone] onto a new computer.
i'm hoping a graphics card is the one thing that will help.
i'm probably going to keep them windowed because my firewall randomly minimizes a fullscreen game and that crashes half of them i need one that runs a bethesda or a bioware game with minimal headaches. i never thought about the card because most people who run the game have some custom built, high powered type of thing. and i have no idea how to build one let alone the money i don't have more then 400+$ lying around also the same people with the custom built, high powered type of thing are also in the troubleshooting forum on a daily basis, so i thought the card ment jack. but here is a computer no better then my laptop that is playing this thing on a setting that would crash it in 10 minutes if i tried it. so i'm thinking the card may be more important then i thought. i don't want something that can run crazy graphics, i just want decent gameplay some anti aliasing so models don't look blocky and pixelated, skyrim i have to run with no anti aliasing dragon age too, and getting skyrim to run on a screen bigger then 800x600 would be nice. i run dragon age on the smallest widescreen i can tolerate 1260x780 or whatever because of the bar on the bottom, playing a healing mage with a 4:3 screen resolution sucks i can quickly fill up the bar with most of the spells i need and not have enough room for the rest with 16:10 i have just enough slots for my spells.
i can't go by valve games, all of them portal 1 and 2 and all of the half life 2 games run at max settings smoothly right now. i can beat up wheatly in beautiful high quality already.
but the ones i have graphics issues at all are fallout 3, dragon age 1 and 2, skyrim, oblivion. i'm hoping to be able to get them running smoothly and the crashes will be less at least. i haven't loaded up dragon age in a year because i don't want to deal with the lag, and the stutter, and the memory leak, and the numerous crash to desktops i face in one day of playing it. and i'm not talking micro stutter here i'm talking a stutter that gets so bad the game basicly turns into a slideshow after a while.
skyrim is not what it should be the ps3 could crank out better quality, heck the 360 with the graphics bug looks better then my pc. and people say pc versions have better graphics, well i have yet to see it.
i can't buy almost anything on the pc without taking a huge gamble about whether my computer can even run it, the nicer the graphics and the bigger the game i see i wind up getting the console version to be safe, which is what i did with skyrim and for the first time got screwed. maybe something wants me to fix my pc gaming issues.
my budget is 100$ or lower i thought a graphics card is cheaper then replacing the whole machine, but the prices go from 60$ to 300$ or over.
i'm hoping that 80$ will cover what i need, i hate to pinch pennies in the computer or electronics department but i'm on social security with no job and no car, i don't have the money to piss away like i hear most doing [sounds like it to me], i have a credit card but i will not charge anything unless i have enough to cover the price that i charge, i don't know how to pay off the card or interest, i don't even have the account password or username, my dad does that. besides if it was my job i would have lost the card ages ago because i would forget to pay it off or pay interest, i'd have lowest credit score of any living person.
i don't even know how much i have right now, i don't mess with the bank account either, so considering just got skyrim 60$ a microwave 70$ and a new tv between 200$ or 300$ course i did have alot more before i got the tv besides the 100$ that stays in to avoid interest. i don't have much leverage gotta wait for my account to recover.

I can list a couple. may be slightly outside of your price range however, not sure on the current prices.
Take a look at the following.
Radeon 5770 (Ive seen them as low as $110 USD)
Radeon 6670 (Seen them as low as $80 USD)
Radeon 6770 ($110, Biggest bang for the buck.)
Can even possibly go with a 5670.
Geforce GT 440 (round $80 after rebates) (My friend's computer has this card and can run just fine maxed out on skyrim... but he has the version of it with GDDR5 instead of GDDR3 memory which is what it usually has.))
Geforce GTX 460 ($120 USD with rebates, highly recommended IMO)
Gefore 560 ($160-$200, BUT you wont really have to upgrade for a long while)
And Jet, maybe you should really read the information I posted and edited in the skyrim thread, latest post. It may not be your video card (although it is a media server card, made for streaming video for a media server and not much else other than decoding and encoding video.)

I have a Phenom II X4 955 overclocked to 3.7GHz, 4GB DDR3 1333MHz, and a Radeon HD 5770. It runs everything I can throw at it at 1920x1080 with at least 30FPS. If I lower some settings to medium, I usually get around 60FPS (sometimes more).

ok i'll try that i also found a site that tells me basicly why i can't run a certain game. my computer passed everything for both skyrim and dragon age but it doesn't even meet the minimum because the graphics card

it says pass on graphics card but my game plays like crap, this is for dragon age. this is the biggest piece of bull i have seen, something is hogging 300mbs on my card, and i have no clue what, i don't even know how to fix that. but it is a media server well that explains alot my ps3 keeps saying media server glados <-- my computer's name got portal 2 before it crashed, once i wiped it clean i renamed it after glados and chell, i'm chell... >_> i'm weird. anyway i didn't even think that was relevent at all the two are not synced. but i was right damn graphics card is the problem i wish i would have wised up and looked into it i didn't know how important a graphics card was. i thought cpu ment speed. i'm an idiot, to stubborn to give it any mind, coulda probably had it fixed by now.
what is with dual moniters, i have 1 moniter and i am happy besides with two you get the gap in between the two screens that would drive me nuts. those look good all good reviews on the radeon 6000, and it's not to expensive, but geforce has less issues that are often marked on ati radeons. but i'm thinking changing to a geforce would be a pain.

Id still take a look at your powersupply regardless. If you do end up getting a new card, your gonna have to make sure the power supply has PCI-e power connectors in case it is needed, as well as enough wattage. Id definately recommend 600 700 watt PSU.

i saw my power supply thing this morning when i checked the computer to see if the graphics card was not a part of the motherboard, my last one was.
i got 300w which i saw is good enough. my computer has no problems outside the games, other then typical win 7 compatibility problems. it take a bit to load up but i do have about 80 background proccesses on average, 76 right now. also i didn't want a graphics card that needed it's own power, i'm not shooting for hd quality, i just want my games to look nice and be more stable then they are, any improvement at all would be great.
because as far as dragon age goes i don't know what playing that game with no problems is even like, i have put more time into fixing it then playing it. this computer is nearly brand new, and i have never had a power failure in any of my computers, i am more of a danger to them then hardware problems could ever be. i have been responsible for 85% of my computer crashes, the other ones were viruses or otherwise. i'm hard on my machines but i've never had to replace any hardware since the first one.
this is the only time i have ever upgraded a computer in 13 years, my dad found a better graphics card on ebay sold by tiger direct, 2 gigs memory and it requires no modifying of my computer to use it, 60$ refurbished i'm happy. cheap and better then my current one good enough. i don't mind getting refurbished items, my sony handycam is refurbished, i wonder what the hell the original owner did to destroy it, because that camera is easy to use, gives me no complaints, and works perfectly. meanwhile i read about problems with the same camera all over the net, i have no clue what they are talking about. and when those cameras started selling i got mine for half price 300$ rather then 600$ because mine was rebuilt.
but i almost have a hard time believing that after all the struggles with pc gaming i have encountered that i may for once get to have some relief, i can't even imagine playing dragon age without it memory leaking for even a second, i don't know what pc gaming really is because my consoles have always ran my games better.
when i do get the card i'll probably adjust the settings very slowly on all of them, i've gotten enough stress to last me a lifetime due to pc game stability issues and i am not about to test my luck.

300W is inadaquate, its the bare minumum for basic functioning to be honest. With your set-up id say upgrade to at least a 450W. You "SHOULD" notice more stability. 300W is the MINUMUM, doesn't mean its gonna run to its full potential. and that minumum is for only putting load on the video card. You have also got to factor in every other component in the computer. And the processor you have in particular is a power hog.
And yes stability signs can also be a sign of an aged and/or failing PSU.
It also looks like background processes are a huge issue for you. Your in need of a major clean-up IMO. if it gets up to around 80, you have got way too much in the way of unnecessary crap[ hogging resources (and FYI under full loadout im running around 28 processes max, with maybe a grand total of 300 MB ram being used. ) That many processes running can also be a sign of malware/viruses and such as well People also don't realize that not everything leaves video memory either. Windows Aero Effects actually stick around in memory, so does your destop among other things. You also cant rely on those memory usage gauges either. Often times they themselves are huge resource hogs (best bet for gauges would be to get a case that displays them for ya, but your talking a pretty penny right there. )
Look up how to print up a DXDIAG log, would have all the info I need to get a really good picture of your issues (I am stilll convinced of it being a power supply issue for stability alongside habits while on the computer. You can also give me a list of every process running as well, guarantee about 70% of it is useless. Also what Antivirus do you run? If its Norton, its a bad choice all together, tons of back-doors and is the biggest resource hog imaginable.

Not listing my stuff, Id feel like people would just think I am showing off the e-peen. But yeah, what powersupply do you have in there? Im guessing maybe a 650 watt?

powersupply probably costs as much as a new computer, i've pumped enough money into dragon age buying this machine and now the new video card 1000+ dollars, i'm not about to spend any more if the game is decent and runs better then now i'll be grateful for that.
i'm not asking for much.
and i said only the games are unstable just the bioware and beth games, i can play everything else on my computer no problem, the only ones not running right are the ones i listed. sony vegas runs good, sims 2 is fine every other steam game not made by those two companies runs good, even darksiders isn't as bad, the only dwnside to pc darksiders is the abyssal armor don't work, but that is a wide spread problem.
and this is why i put down i don't have a job, or a car, everyone assumes i have money, [where i'm not sure] if i did i would have had a company build me a custom computer or something at least if it gets screwed up i don't have to deal with it. and when i am broke i don't spend hardly at all and i don't just charge it without having the money to pay it off.
most of the time i have almost nothing, if i do it's because almost a year has passed this computer is basicly stock from best buy, i have 80 proccesses because i have no clue what they even run and when i do screw with my computer is when it dies. i leave it alone and it is fine i'm not going to just start messing with anything without knowing 100% that it won't screw anything up. and the way i see it the only thing wrong is the graphics card speed is fine, sound is fine, computer runs good. those games run better if i turn down the graphics which tells me it is a graphics issue not proccesser, not sound, nothing else.
also i have several subscriptions one to psn for the plus feature so i know my save files are safe in online storage. rhapsody so i can have my online radio, no other online radio has what i want, which is the rating feature which if i hate a song i can simply click don't play again and it doesn't play it, this feature is something that should be in all online radios, along with skip song. also it is song downloader i can't live without this program.
i don't have the money to piss away like that. since i have the subs on an already tight budget. and i have no idea if it is needed till i try the card.
most likely if it doesn't work i will accept defeat, and just deal with not playing dragon age ever again, at least i don't have to pay to do that. i hate that alot of links i find for things i want could be just a mugen character and it goes through some site that wants money, i'm not a money tree here. a mugen character is an animated sprite which is a moving 2d image, not something i am willing to pay for. heck i just go looking for a song's lyrics and someone wants money, to look at a web page for god sake. and why are ringtones something you have to pay for, how about they make a damn ringtone maker, not one for just smart phones either, and we can make our own from songs we already have. i have 6 ringtones i made myself it isn't hard not worth paying for.
i get tired of going through the net asking for help that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and i get spend, spend, spend like i have the money to do so. i don't and i won't pretend like i do when i got my micro i was in debt to my dad till i had enough in my account to pay it off, my grandma is actually the one who bought skyrim. i was able to get my tv because i had a bit of money built up over 3 months. when i get things i usually wait till i have alot built up or find a site selling the item cheaper and then i go get the thing i want then i have to wait another 3 or more months before i can buy anything else, which is why i always check out upcoming games so i know what i want and how long i have to go without spending, doesn't help i take after my dad the spending machine. often when i am broke i don't even look at amazon to much temptation. amazon is my main online store, because i hate bidding so i don't bother with ebay, if i put money down on something i expect to own it.
i hear this crap to much, i am not rich.
rant over, well at least i feel better now.

Power supply tends to run around $60-$120 depending on wattage.as for a new video card, How is it gonna perform optimally when it is under-juiced? Im just stating what has been known in the computer field for years. A new card will help to a degree, but you may have the whole computer just shut off on ya. (Ive had it happen with my sisters computer, had a 8600GTS and a 350 watt power supply. Every time she would go to play an graphics intensive game like NWN2, Oblivion, or Fallout3 it would restart the computer on its own. I wound up putting in a higher wattage power supply and it fixed the problem. I am just stating from experience of what works and what doesn't.
And the reason for the spend spend spend? When dealing with electrical components, CHEEP =/= good quality parts 99% of the time. Refurbed cards are known to overheat and such, but it is still ultimately up to you in the end what to do, so why b***h about it? its not like we are forcing you to get the good parts. I had a limited budget as well and you know what I did? I saved up for the new parts over the course of a year while I experimented with INI file tweaks for games to get them running nice. (Such as getting Oblivion to run on a Geforce 3 series card before Oldblivion was even released.
/exec mini-rant.exe
In the end if you want to blame anything blame f*****g capitalism, not the people who try to simply survive in the system. I wasn't being nasty about it at all, I was just listing the facts about PC parts, yet somehow its "attacking" you and your beliefs from the way said rant is. Realize they are just SUGGESTIONS and that it is up to you in the end to decide. /end

Yes, I do have a DeviantArt, it is at.... http://demonabyss10.deviantart.com/
In the end if you want to blame anything blame f***ing capitalism, not the people who try to simply survive in the system. I wasn't being nasty about it at all, I was just listing the facts about PC parts, yet somehow its "attacking" you and your beliefs from the way said rant is. Realize they are just SUGGESTIONS and that it is up to you in the end to decide. /end
i don't even want a suggestion to spend more, because every time i ask for help of any kind, on any forum all i get is buy this buy that, that rant wasn't directed at you rather then every person who has said that.
also i have a bit of a spending problem i can't not spend for a very long time, the times where my money has built up are slim to none. and other then running a computer i know nothing about them, i've gone through 7 or 8 now most of the time it was my fault the computer died. if the card doesn't help i'll think about it, but if anything i will back down the processor to keep it from hogging energy. but if i put a 650w power supply that will raise the electric bill i think, i'm trying to get one thing fixed at a time. i don't want to buy both if the one thing fixes the problem.
also i can run the games fine and if i crank up the graphics only the game is affected. the game has the issues only the whole machine is great, probably the best one i got yet.
but when it comes down to it i'm at my wits end with dragon age because i have put so much effort and money into it and nothing has helped so far, i am hesitant to drop more money into it.
and i live in the usa no capitalism here that i know of, but where i live things are expensive because of the debt we are in. and all i know is this refurbished card is half the price of one band new and if it works i'll be happy. i don't know jack about the technical part of a computer or the things that run in the background, if you want my processes and can make heads or tails of it i'll post it, if i even knew how to do so...
to be honest i would love to get this thing to load faster but i don't have the knowledge to do that.

I can at least help you with the processes and background programs, anything else I would have to actually be there to deal with.
So yeah just give me a list of all the processes and background programs that are running,

Ill go through the ones I know. I can also suggest downloading Malwarebytes anti-malware and doing a complete scan of the system, then reposting after quarantining what needs quarantining.
Should be save disabling the following.
googletoolbarnotifier.exe*32
hp_remote_solution.exe*32
trustedinstaller.exe
updater.exe*32
vcddaemon.exe*32
those I know off the top of my head are safe. Make sure you close the entire process tree instead of just the process. But As stated, id check this AFTER running malwarebytes. You can then actually go on google and search every individual process. For those you can't necessarily find, trial and error works just as well, if something gets screwed up you just restart your computer. Be thankful its not like messing around with registry settings.
And yeah that Dragon Age one? Known 2 people who used it, it helped the stuttering but caused memory leaks and general program stability. Doesn't make sense to me but you might want to look into it. You may have to run on low without it but it might actually be playable.
FYI: Even though I run Win7 ultimate, I am still far more familiar to win xp processes and services, have no clue at all with vista because its complete garbage.
Also you can go into MSconfig and disable unneccesary start-up programs and services. Before you do I would recommend looking up what each one does before mucking around in there. As for registry stuff I refuse to mess around and tell other people what to do there. In other words, don't touch it.

ok i'll try that, dao exiter helps me it forcefully crashes the game, because i found that exiting the game normally when it starts stuttering does jack, i load it back up and it continues to stutter right where it left off, i found saving constantly helps relieve the symptoms but not for long. but if i don't exit game and go through the stutter which makes the game look like a slideshow and let it crash i can load it back up and it will run good for about 4 hours. when the game crashes it actually runs better when i load it back up, shutting down normally gives me about 30 minutes.
as for the memory leak it's been doing that since day one, all i can do anymore is try to make the crashes and issues more tolerable the best i can. like it is less of a pain to crash the program then play at 2 fps for 20 minutes and wait for win 7 to go through it's whole process to shut it down. i need one for fallout 3 desperately, all i really need for that one though is something that lets my mouse go outside of the game's window, because i have had many times where it crashes and the popup box comes up and i can't click it or use the keyboard because my mouse is stuck and my keyboard seems to be hostage to the game only thing that works is using ctrl alt del and loging off or shutting down the computer and try to stop it from shutting down after the game is nuked and my mouse is freed.
with the issues i have now with these games i'll be happy with any improvement, i don't have much hope in finding an answer though. me and them have been at this for 2 years or more now, i'm surprised i still bother anymore.

Well A lot of what I learned with dealing with the nitty gritty was by trial and error. Memory leaks in particular can be caused by software conflicting with eachother, or a bad chip on a stick of ram. Did you get the ram used? Did you follow proper precautions when you installed the sticks? Do Their clock speeds all match up? Those are huge factors that can influence memory leaks. The main reason I don't buy used components is that you can't trust whether a chip got zapped. It is a big issue when it comes to memory, not just regular RAM but the RAM that is also on a video card.
Basically summing it up as it would be much easier for me to fix it if I was there to actually test components. I Fail miserably at walking people through stuff, which is why I don't work tech support (plus under a lot of stress for the past few weeks, so I may seem much more of an a**hole than I usually am, which I will apologize for. (Since I know at times it might seem like im insulting your intelligence, its kind of a stress response for me :/ )
