Hey.
Im getting more and more racked off with grub.
Im starting to hate it more and more every time I hear it.
I have repaired my MBR by reinstalling windows.
Which worked fine.
But because of my incredibly bad luck I cannot find the damn tutorial I followed to achieve this failed attempt at installing GRUB.
Anyway, when I TRY to boot into my machine I just get this weird command line thing.
It begins with this:Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.

I just want my laptop working again.
Im really REALLY fed up with grub..

Did it look like this?

http://members.iinet.net.au/~herman546/p15.html#cli

PS installing windows won't automatically fix boot problems unless you specifically fix your mbr.

After you reinstalled windows could you boot into windows?

Yeah
Just fine.
I deleted the system reserve partition so Windows 7 could put a fresh one back.

When you turn your machine on do you have the choice to boot into windows or linux, and then choose linux which is when you get grub's cli?

or are you being dumped straight into grub's cli?

Btw, if yo don't have any important files sitting on your linux partition and just want to try linux, you could always see if you fare better using wubi. It will be a little slower but should be easier.

Damn you Microsoft.
Damn you to hell Microsoft. I hate them....
You had to be installed on a primary partition didn't you, Windows?

Speaking of grubs that reminds me of this scene from Master and Commander.

Capt. Jack Aubrey: Do you see those two weevils doctor?
Dr. Stephen Maturin: I do.
Capt. Jack Aubrey: Which would you choose?
Dr. Stephen Maturin: [sighs annoyed] Neither; there is not a scrap a difference between them. They are the same species of Curculio.
Capt. Jack Aubrey: If you had to choose. If you were forced to make a choice. If there was no other response...
Dr. Stephen Maturin: [Exasperated] Well then if you are going to *push* me...
[the doctor studies the weevils briefly]
Dr. Stephen Maturin: ...I would choose the right hand weevil; it has... significant advantage in both length and breadth.
[the captain thumps his fist in the table]
Capt. Jack Aubrey: There, I have you! You're completely dished! Do you not know that in the service...
[pauses]
Capt. Jack Aubrey: ...one must always choose the lesser of two weevils.

It is really hard trying to help people solve multi boot problems, sorry.

It is possible to fix the problem you have but you will need to read up on and understand the boot process.

Get a piece of paper and write out the details of every partition, make sure only the correct partitions are bootable etc.

Whichever bootloader you are going to use first make sure you understand how to get it to boot the correct partitions and then just edit it manually.

If you just skim read and try this or try that you rapidly end up being annoyed with a non booting computer. Sit, read patiently until you understand and then fix it.

Option 2 if you aren't patient enough to do that is wipe and reinstall everything...

I recommend option 1.

In your current situation this is likely to be the quickest and easiest solution, and at least stuff you've tweaked on the existing install won't get trampled on - unless you reformat of course.
And next time, don't fiddle with grub unless you're completely sure of what it is you're fiddling with!
It's much more involved than the earlier 0.9x versions but much more capable. Translation: even more study is required.

 Yep. With Microsoft I most often think uncharitable things which are neatly summed up with "Keep banging those rocks together, guys... You'll get it eventually."

I know Windows is a little more malleable than it used to be but suspect that this is still the route of least resistance.

Hahah yeah  .
It makes me wonder how I used to survive with JUST VISTA (Until 2009 when I became more interested in Linux, then in 2010 I was Windows free)... Can you believe it?
Its great to be Windows free. infact the only reason why I want Windows is because I like to play games like Mafia 2 (Which does work on Wine but no where near as good as it does on Windows) which plays really well on my laptop. Saving my from lugging my iMac to the family Static Caravan every time we go down... Hahaha

After getting Windows booting itself again, try installing your Linux into its own primary and active (boot) partition on a different drive, if you have one, and then place its own loader right there in that partition ...

Edit: No need for the Linux to be in an active partition -- it can be in a partition on the same drive as Windows -- if its installer will still put the necessary stuff in /boot ...

... and then take a look at this: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp4335489.html#4335489

Note: I believe Lucid Puppy and Wary each have grub4dosconfig-v1.7.1 inside where slacko has grub4dosconfig-v1.7 and did not do quite as well on my own system ... and at least for my own stuff here, Lucid Puppy running "live" from a CD works well as a Linux "utility" with internet access.
