It is a reminder program for Google Calendar.

In order to use it, I enter my Gmail e-mail address and password.

If you are giving away your email address and account password to a third party they will have full access to all your emails as would anyone else they may share that information with.

Is giving my information to a program the same as giving it to a third party?

Yes.

EDIT: IIRC - it's possible to subscribe to a google calendar using any standard iCal app (such as Thunderbird/Lightning) using a special URL that does not contain the same password as the one you use to access your mailbox. You might want to look into setting that up for alerting.
