Only costing around $149, B&N had a two week return policy. Despite its shortcomings, I've been VERY happy with it and am looking forwards to increasing physical shelf space.
It's simple and does one thing great: reads ebooks
PROS:
- works best with novels and any documents with simple layouts
- reading its E-Ink screen reads just like paper, down to the light reflection. It's nothing like LCD screens.
- it's lasted me several months on a single charge (WIFI always turned off)
- i can carry 23 books (with a MicroSD, it can be 1000's)
* you can easily free up physical shelf space
- font size is adjustable (some PDF files won't allow it)
CONS:
- sporadically doesn't respond to finger movements on screen or flips 2 pages when you only meant 1
- doesn't work well with complex layouts: multiple columns, graphs, charts, photo insets, etc
- textbooks are definitely out (see above)
- mileage varies with non EPUB formats (PDF, DOC, HTML, etc)
- can't adjust font size with some PDF files
- USB connector can break after 5 months (never happened to me)
If you manage your Nook ebook selection using your B&N account, it may be possible for them to remotely delete your ebooks.
It's already happened on the Amazon Kindle with the 1984 book. Let's hope B&N doesn't try the same thing. I manage my Nook using Calibre E-book Manager and transfer books from my hard drive.
