Well I study computer maintenance and i'm not the bestest but if it still doesn't go past the Windows XP black bit and you can only start the computer in safe mode the copy of Windows XP maybe damaged. Or the Master Boot Record files maybe too but then that would be easyily noticable. I once installed SP2 for windows XP and removed it and a similar thing happened and would only start in safe mode. Some viruses can do that. Also have you tried doing a repair installation of Windows XP? I think you can do that in safe mode too. Maybe some files were accidently removed by that software you used, or the .DLL or some system32 files could be damaged, lots of reasons.

Hope this may point you in some direction.

Jamie

i was told to remove system mechanic, so i did that and restarted, no luck,

this time called for help to smartcomputing tech support(im a subscriber of pctoday magazine) he did the mbr thing with me and still no luck  he did say that he was going to tell teir 2 techs and they will call tomorrow,

a windows xp dont come with restore disks like previous editions.it has 2 drives c: and d: and d is usually the recovery console and i even went into that and did fixmbr and still no luck!

i asked funaho about problem and he said could be graphics driver, it appears that everything is ok in the driver no warnings.

while in safe mode i did though see the computer's event veiwer and seen about hardware/woftware has been changed and i have restarted computer a few times since last scan and maintain or removeal of unneeded or damaged files and worked just fine but seems since this am so far i still have is a doorstop.

i have had sp2 in this thing since about 2003 or 4 and no problems until now. it cant be some virus beucase CA and system mechanic scanned and ca found nothing and system mechanic only found a few small spyware threats that were reoved with no problems.

i am aware that sp2 can be removed using safe mode, heres a new problem (happening as im typing this) all i get now with safe mode is a long list of .sys's

sorry i know it was long i know im ususually he one answering these kinda of questions but it seems when it hits the answerer the reverse happens :?

it would be nice if the town my dad works for was linux based since i hear such great success stories with it i guess it is very great and best out there as an OS.

i know in past posts u may have seen how i was complaining about linux and things but now i kinda feel liek i want to learn about it more and actually use it even though its unix based(like a mac) were the personal settings and machine settings are in differant control panels (KDE??)

Well if it was me I would get a USB drive or any sort of mass drive and backup everything that's important and then just format the OS and re-partition then re-install XP, if it's not the display, mbr or any hardware issues, it's only got to be on the software side, makes me think Windows XP is damaged.

Actually i'll add, it could possibly be the graphics, because I remember XP not starting once when I had it, then when I turned it of I got this error code and message, to do with graphics. But it cant be the RAM, Processor because if their was no processor their would be no display whatsoever and if their wasnt enough RAM the pc would just take years to start up. I recon it could be out of them two because if it starts up in safe mode you know pretty much everything is working but just not correctly, I may be wrong but theirs alot you can try.

UPDATE: day b 4 yesterday i did in fact do a fixmbr under direction of a person on phone from smartcomputing(a magazine i subscribe to) and it still happened so yesterday i called hp and they seen the notes from the other hp tech and he suggested do a system restore. so after restoring computer to the date of oct 6. everything was just great all i had to do was redownload CA and clicked disable everything in start tab in msconfig.

i know i speak alot about computers and didnt think to do a system restore to an earlier date.but when really scared of loosing everything and ticked off as well i guess our minds go blank and wind up calling for help.

thanks for all your suggestions jamie06.

Microsoft word and excel formats are both supported in openoffice, as I generally save to word format to make sure windows boxes can read my work, and would use excel format for spreadsheets if I needed to
