See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newline. Even simple ASCII text files are subject to differences across systems. Besides the character sequence marking new lines in a text file, big-endian versus little-endian plays a role.

Actually, endianness plays no role in ASCII text files as every character is just a single-byte. Endianness is only a concern with multi-byte character encodings.

I mostly use Windows but I much prefer a single LF for newlines in text files.
