with flatscreen monitors there is a fixed upper resolution,
usually on a laptop that means around 1200x800.
there is no real benefit to get from scaling since its the physical screen thats limited.
also, the retina screen while nice, are not a new thing, its simply a high resolution screen, i have an old crt drawing monitor that can run a similar resolution.
when i first heard about it i actually had the impression they had created a true retinal display capable of providing LOS projection onto the retina directly.
