Verizon high speed internet question?

I have a box on my wall with a back-up battery for internet but if I loss power, I still can't use internet because my router is plugged into an electrical outlet. Why do I have this back-up battery for? What is it backing up? Can anyone help??

Does it also handle your telephone? If so, it's probably to maintain phone service (especially 911) during power failures.

It keeps your ONT alive so your phone stays working for at least 2 hours-mine lasts for up to 6 hours on battery.
