The US has developed a heat ray weapon which uses microwaves to make enemies feel pain and run away.

I've heard about THAT one for a few years. It's a Directed Energy Weapon, or DEW (don't even need to read the article for it). I'd say it's "less lethal" ordinance (I consider any weapons thought of as "non-lethal" as "less-lethal", like a taser or pepper spray, after hearing about other effects of these, and remembering the lines of an ordinance guy talking to Johnny Knoxville about the "less-lethal" bag projectile that he was going to cop in the stomach).

I saw that one on a show awhile ago. It is supposed to be used for riot control, and plans are being made to deploy it in Iraq sometime in the future.

This ray has been invented for years, it's just kind of a microwave launcher 8) The only reason they have delayed it's deployment for so long it's so they had enough time to do hundreds of tests to be assured it is not lethal, and to do some adjustments.

Personally, I would prefer all the money wasted in this project to go to MTHEL. THAT is useful. The best thing to stop riots has been already invented, and it's called BLU-109/B.

Anyone know if the ray gun will penetrate through drywall and plaster? I'd like to have one to quiet my neighbors down when they wake me up at 2am.

Considering it's all about microwaves which have no penetration power, probably won't; but even if it did, it would more likely make your neighbours scream in pain rather than shut their mouths :D :D I guess it's worth trying anyway

I had a funny idea: a heat ray gun that works by burning the body from the outside while boiling it inside very, very quickly. In a sense, disenagration. What do you think about this funny little concept?

The most efficient "directed energy" weapon is an aimed firearm.

It produces directed kinetic energy.

I think it could definitely work considering that the human body is at least 70% water and water molecules readily absorb microwave radiation and give off heat(hence the common use of microwaves in ovens). Expose to an intense burst of microwaves will heat water inside the body to boiling and if this can be done rapidly it will cause people to literally explode like an overcooked hotdog in a microwave oven.

Intense microwave beams for military purposes are known as "HERF weapons" and are highly useful in electronic warfare: They can be used to fry enemy electronics, knock out powerlines, and are far more penetrating than ElectroMagnetic Pulses.

It should go through drywall and plaster, but not so well through slate, granite or concrete.

It will not penetrate tin foil, so demonstrators / terrorists just need to wear a conductive foil bag - available from any camping shop, emergency supply store or army backpack. A bunch of 0 BC centurions could even reflect the beam back at the sender.
