All the cool kids use ruby, right? But php matured into a pretty good language. There is always hip hop to compile into C++.

Ruby is neat, is actually pretty darn awesome: Just not for web stuff. The cool kids, well.. you know how they are.

Ruby is *wonderful* for scripting... But PHP enjoys a much more solid level of support from popular web servers, especially apache.

Ruby on rails, as is usually used for web stuff, is a "full stack" -- IE it's own web server, etc etc.

For a major web-dev project? LAMP all the way!

Either way, if you can make it work and get paid, it's all good.. So don't be shy to try both for the prototype!

I love ruby and its elegant syntax, but I agree, LAMP is mature and proven.
