I can't believe I took my laptop apart, cleaned it a bit then put it back together and it worked.

The fan needed a clean and I was worried about a clicking noise coming from inside. I didn't solve that issue but the fan is cleaner now. It was a HP G62 and it was tricky to take apart. I don't think I would do it again though.

Has anyone else done this?

I have an MSI AE2430 which I've taken apart twice - once to change the RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB, and once to change the HDD to a SDD. I've since went back to the old RAM because the Crucial I'd put in went bust after about a year. Go figure.

more than i care to remember.

sometimes one is amazed at what can be found inside those things, from sand over coins to the company gas card.

but yes, every new model is an adventure and they are often costructed using some very convoluted design choices, there are disassembly guides, they can often reveal any tricks one cant immediately glean from the labtop itself.

I've been inside desktop machines lots of times. I've assembled quite a number of them in my time, the most I've really done with a laptop was the more simple upgrades like the HDD and RAM. I've also been inside the PS3 a few times as well as the 360.

Disassembly guides are ESSENTIAL for most laPtops (what the heck is a labtop anyway? For lab use only?) ;)

I've damaged a couple over the years - utterly destroyed one - because of strange screws in odd places, etc. :(

I think they should allow easier access to the fan. You should be able to just unscrew a panel and clean it. But with this model I had to remove the keyboard, the HDD, then unplug loads of cords inside, take the front out and then finally take all the back off...

They do it on purpose I think so most people will either buy a new one or pay for it to be repaired.

i agree, unfortunately i think some of it is limited by the physical size and contruction of the laPtop  (always gets it wrong)

Fundamentally every time you try to shrink something down, it becomes harder to service. Fact of life.

On the plus side, newer laptops are getting more features out of a single processor instead of multiple ones - and those fewer chips run cooler and more efficient. With a little more redesign, surely Intel can come up with what a few others have - everything on a single chip which will keep it all the easier to cool.

And I wasn't friendly-ribbing just you... I keep seeing "labtop" all the time and I wonder what thought process goes into it...
One time, I saw so many kijiji ads for labtops, I placed an ad for "your own home laboratory so you too can use a labtop!" It was made from a cardboard box and featured an eyedropper and measuring cup for $250. ;)

I have taken apart and reassembled dozens of laptops. It's mainly about experience. Once you're comfortable enough, it's not too bad. Documentation and an orderly mind helps. Also a magnetic screw dish to keep the many, MANY screws together.
