Depends on the tablet. My current tablet (an Asus Transformer running Android) has batteries that last for about 16 hours of use, so I never switch it off. It doesn't have 3G, though, just wifi - but that is all I need. I can use my phone as a wifi hotspot on the few occasions that I need web access via 3G.

I don't use the tablet for all my Internet browsing - some things are easier to see on a PC with a big screen. But I do use the tablet for many Internet tasks, including email, watching online videos, various apps, etc. I also use it to watch movies, play games, and read ebooks. It has replaced my old work laptop as my mobile computer.

My first (cheapie) tablet only had one or two hours of battery life, and only had a 7 inch screen. So I didn't use it on the web much - just for reading ebooks.

I've got an iPad, and for general browsing ends it's quite useful and a lot more wieldy than a laptop. And the battery lasts quite a bit more too. Laptops are better for typing though, and then there is the old iOS - Adobe Flash problem. But yeah, tablets are great.

I use a Kindle Fire (was given to me as a gift last year) as my primary internet device. Of course I've rooted it and installed custom firmware, CM9 Android 4.0.4 and it runs great! There are Jelly Bean ROMs available for it but they are early builds so many glitches still plague them. I can easily get 15+ hours out of one charge with the custom ROM and kernal. The stock Amazon UI is only good for about 8-10 hours of battery. The cheaper tablets (<$100) usually have crappy batteries with only like 2200mah or less. The Kindle Fires are dropping in price now that Amazon is releasing the upgrades.
