I have a HDD that I pulled out of an old laptop that quit working a few months back. I destroyed the computer in a rage but not before removing the HDD and other valuable parts so I could reuse them. Now I have looked around and seen some stuff about how to use this Laptop HDD. It has al my stuff on it and I need to access these files. How do I go about doing this....what do I need to buy? I'm a techno idiot so help me out. Also I see the term "SATA" drive alot? what is a SATA drive? all I want to do is access my old computers files but I need someone who is smart to tell me how to do this? I want to use it like a extra USB drive but I don't want to spend more than $30 as its all I got right now. Whats my best option or is it going to cost a fortune to access these files? HELP!!?!?!?! :x

Amazon has many of these types of things.

3.5" enclosure

Does not answer my question of which one is the right one for my laptop HDD. I don't know what size the HDD is and don't have any way to measure.

You'll want to get a suitable external drive enclosure, but you'll need to know what type of drive you have. It'll probably be a 2.5" drive, but depending on the age might be IDE (or PATA) or SATA. If it's IDE, it'll have a two rows of 22 pins each across the back edge.

So figure out which one it is (it's unlikely to be any other type), and pick up either a USB 2.5" IDE drive enclosure, or a USB 2.5" SATA enclosure. You can then just install the drive in that and plug it in as a USB drive. Plug it right into the USB ports on the computer, or a powered USB hub (not an unpowered hub, though).

These things are pretty easy to find, and if it's just an enclosure without a drive (sometimes they're sold together) they're often under $30. Personally I'd probably check tigerdirect first, but any well-stocked computer vendor should have them.

Note that you most likely need a 2.5", not a 3.5", enclosure...

If I could post photos I would send some of what the HDD looks like as I don't know the difference as its not marked on the back of the HDD rather its IDE or SATA and I would not know the difference between the two. I'm a damn idiot. all it says is
"Toshiba Disk Drive MK2565GXSN HDD2J14 B UL01 T DC+5V 1.0A" thats all that I can find. It has 220GB if thats helps.

Looks like that's a 250GB 2.5" SATA drive. So 2.5" SATA enclosure it is, then.

Like this, for example: Vantec NexStar TX NST-210S2-BK Hard Drive Enclosure

If you're going to keep the drive, then a drive enclosure is a good idea. However, if you are just goint to transfer data from the old drive to your current system, something like this might be more in order.

my new HDD is only 300GB and so far 150GB is used up. So I will just use the old 220GB HDD like a external drive so its going to be a enclosure. I want to keep the drive. Thanks for all the help guys! I appreciate it very much. Technology never stops advancing!! :D
