Seriously what is Diaspora and what does this have to do about competing against Facebook?

The very simple, very short answer - leaving a lot out - is that Diaspora is an open source alternative to Facebook. With Diaspora you control your information, instead of some corporation (Facebook, for example) controlling it.

The reason I put this thread is because my mom HATES Facebook, because you can't control your profile. Ever since I showed my mom, the news about Diaspora, I told her that I could finally meet some people, that is not Facebook. But then again, she denied that I can't create my own account because she still can't trust this kind of site. She fears that if it has a Facebook-related problem like hackers then it can't be trusted.

Billions of people should abandon Facebook, and join Diaspora*.

They should do it in memory of Ilya Zhitomirskiy (12 October 1989 – 12 November 2011), one of the most important co-creators of this project.

Seriously. There are over like 375,000 accounts that are active. We need more people.

If you want to learn more about the Diaspora project, here is the link: Diaspora Project

If you want to sign in for free, here it is: DIASPORA*

Try to spread the word about this new and revolutionary social network.

Who knows? Maybe Alex Plank might add the Wrong Planet site on Diaspora*.

I don't have a Diaspora* account yet (someday I will have one), but I can assure you that it looks better than Facebook.

Here's a video telling you why Diaspora* is better than other social networks:

Here's a video of someone using the account in action:

Reply me of what you think of this site, or if you're planning on joining.

Your posts seem more like advertising than a question or a discussion.

I was skeptical and curious about this site (you could see my questions at the top of this page), but now I found out that is great. I just want people to delete their Facebook accounts and join this one instead. I could see the future of this site right now. Is really popular.

Why do people have to join one or the other? Neither is certainly an option.
