10.1" min. screen high ppi desirable

prefer quad core if possible
wifi

1. gorilla glass~~opinions? screen coatings?
2. is it difficult for Win 7 PC to interact with Android device? any caveats?
3. best to stick with a Win 8 OS?
4. opinions of IPR and other add-ons that stores present you with?
5. do any tablets use Linux distros? good? bad?
6. dumb ? ~~there are huge numbers of apps for Apple's OS and for the Android OS but what apps do tablets which run Win8 use?

I'd say in an Android tab, look at the Asus transformer series. It has all the features/ports you are looking for. It would excel at web surfing, video, and would be a robust gaming platform too.

I have a first gen Asus and it is still a good tablet. Build quality is very good too.

My next tab will be a Windows tab mostly likely... or whatever can run ms office and totally replace my laptop.

Right now, I'm not sure the fitst gen win tabs are quite ready for prime time....

Either increase your budget, or lower your specs. You can spec out tablets at newegg (or apple's web site) if you want to get an idea of what features are available in your price range.

I appreciate you sought me but but I don't know the tablet world well at all - I'm a standard desktop/laptop guy...

If I had a $500 budget though, I'd get a Windows8-based unit just for the cross-compatibility. Instead of Android apps, I'd have REAL Windows apps I can also run on the desktop... (For those 1-2 critical apps I like to take with me... personal preference.)

I don't know other systems (like Android) well so I prefer things non-Windows to be simple and logical... I'll give Apple a nod for that one.
But I also share your need for things to be very responsive and snappy... I hate waiting with the hourglass icon laughing at me. :)

Asus vivotab smart. I'm actually typing this on one of those. Its not a quadcore though, only dual 1.8 with hyperthreading. Has micro hdmi out, 64gb storage, microsd slot, Bluetooth, 10.1" screen, gorilla glass, and there's a deal on amazon on them right now for about 480. I love mine and have actually retired my laptop almost fully, I only use it for games now.
And the best part, it runs full Windows 8, meaning you're not limited by what's in the Microsoft store, you can run any .exe you want. Given some intensive things might be slow, but for example I have PhotoShop cs6 on mine and it runs perfect and fast
