Server - Which OS do you use?

For servers, I prefer FreeBSD since driver support isn't really an issue and stability/performance is more important. Linux is OK for servers but I've had the most luck with FreeBSD which WrongPlanet currently runs on. I've always used Red Hat/ Debian for linux servers. I've never used Gentoo for a production server, but it's great for desktop use.

When I worked at AOL, we used Linux, HP-UX, and Solaris. We were phasing out most of the Solaris and HP-UX servers and replacing them with linux servers.

FreeBSD: Great legacy, clean codebase. Rock solid.

Linux: Beatiful hackjob, but also in constant development. It's basically up to the end-user/vendor or company to clean it up for increased security/stability. If it were my servers BSD would come first.

NetBSD: my pet research project for understanding Unix code, very neat and tidy.

OpenBSD: for the security freaks. I'd use it for firewalls and that sort of stuff.

Gentoo is sweet, a bit over-the-top-overkill because of all the recompiling. Yeah, you can tailor your own system but look at the time cost.

For the other old UNIX beasts, I have limited experience with them. Could learn pretty fast.

Anything but Windows.

Linux at Hostrocket. I wouldn't use Windows as a server unless an immense amount of money was involved (as in reaching my bank account from MS).
