For example, web pages with a white background or this description box. Large areas of bright white can stress me out and bother me in multiple ways and if it's possible I would like to make them a calming grey color.

What browser do you use?

Firefox has a setting under "Options" that allows you to set a background, text color, and font to apply to every page. Other popular browsers likely have something similar. I'm not sure it would work for the description boxes, but it would work for most backgrounds.

(Alternately, you could try turning down the brightness on your monitor.)

In Firefox, the steps are:

1. Choose "Tools".
2. Choose "Settings".
3. Choose "Content".
3. Choose "Colours".
4. Click "Background colours" and choose your preferred colour.
(you might also want to adjust Font or Text Colours after doing this).
5. Deactivate "Use system colours",
and also deactivate "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above".

I don't know about other browsers.

turn down the brightness settings on your monitor to the lowest possible.

Oldest ways are always best.

I sometimes keep the monitor brightness low since I have sensory issues with the brightness.
But changing background colour can be better for reading since - unlike turning down brightness -
it won't decrease the readability of text.

That grey background colour was a good idea.
I tried it and it's calming to watch.

you can apply a universal style sheet for the browser with an extension such as greasemonkey or stylish. It may hinder the viewing of some sites initially, but you can add exceptions to what sites the style sheet pertains to if this is the case. It makes browsing much easier on my eyes.
