Worst human innovations/inventions/ideas

Sure, in recorded history, there have been some good innovations and inventions, but there were some that well, seemed like a good idea at the time.

I can think of four:
Lead in paint
Asbestos
Nuclear testing you could watch
and not allowing women to go topless (at least, in the US).

What do you think some of the worst ideas in human history are, or ones that seemed like a good idea at the time?

TV

Alcohol

Cigarettes

The sex industry

The idea that women should walk around topless -- yuck! who wants to see those repugnant flabby udders --

The fuss about appearances

All kinds of gatherings

The idea "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion ..."

The idea of a god

Creationism

Preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, flavor enhancers and other poison added to food

Mass animal husbandry

Animal testing

job interviews

resume

leaf blowers

cell phones

power windows

Cable and Satellite TV -- Bazillions of channels, and nothing worth watching.

Fashion
complete intolerance for some else's religion (especially when it's none of your business)

I consider our modern pants/shirt setup a very bad innovation.

Whatever made us stop wearing kimono/toga like shirts/early medieval garb and instead put on what we use now... I will never know.

@Dantac: I disagree. It makes dress much more easier to put on/take off, personally.

But think about it.... if there was no pants/shirt setup we'd all be wearing hugh heffner type clothes.

Having lived in Japan for a little while I can tell you... man its COMFY and so utilitarian (pockets/stuff so much better than pants/shirt).

power structures other than meritocracies

Here's a list of things I consider the worst.

Censorship (the kind that would have been brought by S.O.P.A.)

Plots that ruin a TV Show, cartoon, videogame, or Movie's canon for the fans.

Religious Violence

IGN reviews (Sick of their good reviews on game's that turn out to be crap because the developers buy the reviews by advertising on their website while games I find good get bad reviews.)

Coverups (Tell the f***ing truth!)

Holding back over half of the game content for DLC (I'm looking at you EA!)

Megaman Xover (Such poor production quality. Three guys can make an exact copy of the game using Flash)
