You see iTunes sells music in an encrypted form known as .m4p, basically it's .mp4 protected. Thus you buy an .mp4 that's encrypted using their version of DRM. After this though the file is actually a new kind, where-as .mp3 is it's old brother. Within this they have different parts, some are m4a (audio only) m4v (video an audio), etc. If you have an MPEG-4 file you are in good standing by me, it's much newer and the old style .mp3 was developed a very long time ago although it's still popular.
