i'm having computer problems

alright my computer keeps freezing and losing power, i have highspeed internet so it shouldn't be doing this, it was pretty windy here today, so maybe a powerline snapped somewhere and is disrupting my internet?

I DON'T WANT TO BE ON THE INTERNET AND SUDDENLY LOSE POWER. hahaha doesn't the internet run on cables under the sea? and not telephone poles?

on what exactly are you loosing power on? when your computer looses power, do the lights in your house go out too.

hahahahaha no my lights are still on. like my computer will freeze and i have to shut it off starting it all over again its happend all day and i thought it was because of the hurricane force gales we have been getting here i'm not really that computer savey, so i just don't know what could be making this happen

i think it was the wind. the wind does some pretty crazy things out where i live i don't want to give my exact location about where i live at but we have had winds of up to 100 mph with no storms around

tryed clearing cache, temp. internet files??? do anti spy ad and virus scan?? do you have a firewall??

disk cleanup,scandisk, defrag, add/remove unused or unwanted programs??


system hacks and viruses and other things like built up files can really slow a machine down.

well i only have the free versions of all those programes, so something prolly squeeked by. i usually only run the antivirus once a week but my computer this morning seems to be aok

AVG Free Edition usually don't let anything slip by, you can try that if you suspect your current AV doesn't work quite well in that aspect. Does it usually freeze while running certain programs? Also, if it's an old computer it might feeze because of component age.

have you also went into harddrive properties and added more ram space? or added a ram card? that will also prevent lockups cuasing restarts.

to do this, press windows key and pause/break then click on advanced tab,then click on settings in performance area then click change for virtual ram. in change area u will have to type in the minumum and maximum numbers of mb space for drive to use. on my system i have it set on 3000 mb (laptop) and 2200mb for desktop.

about the machine loosing power and shutting down or off on own. with machine off check plugs and power supply.

if still no luck also check the power management settings(start>control panel>display>screensaver(lower part of page is power options) make sure theres nothing having to do with shut down computer or turn off after a specified amount of time.

Have you scanned your PC for "spyware" lately?? If you use Windows, Download and install the current version of "Spybot Search & Destroy" -- it's free and will get rid of almost all of the spyware that might be lurking on the insides of your system.

It sounds more like a hardware problem. Perhaps you should try getting a new power supply. This is all assuming the thing is literally shutting off on you and not turning back on unless you press the power button.

If your lights are dimming when this happens then you should get a UPS.

Do you have a circuit breaker?

You might want to get one because you can damage your computer.

I'd imagine most houses have those built in because they're required by law. Although a surge suppression/prorotector would be a wise thing to use.

AHA!! It's all making sense to me now, LOL!!

If your power went out for a few seconds, then suddenly came back on, it would definately make your PC barf (freeze up) and cause your modem to reboot...




A quality UPS can get expensive! I'd recommend that you just remember to save your work every 5-10 minutes, just in case when the weather acts up like this...



Good point, Alex! You can buy a surge protector at Menards, Home Depot, etc. for under $20!

I'm just talking about one of the ones you get at Wal-Mart. They don't give you very long off-power operation but it would help you coast over your brownouts.

Oh, I see... I guess a UPS with 5 or 10 minutes of battery life would probably be enough for me -- enough time to save everything and shut down...
