Georgy La Maitre, a Jesuit priest who was also a first rate physicist and cosmologist.

Einstein initially agreed with his mathematics (based on Einstein's own theory) but disagreed with his conclusions. Einstein believed in the steady state universe.

Fred Hoyle did only coin the frase, and he was actually a supporter of the Steady State theory(Links: Wikipedia: Fred Hoyle, Wikipedia: Steady State Theory).
The idea about a Big Bang was first proposed in 1971 in a poem by Erasmus Darwin(Links: Wikipedia: Erasmus Darwin, Wikipedia: History of the Big Bang theory).

I have never been so embarrased in my entire life!
How can I live on with the shame?
And I meant 1791, by the way.

He has also shown that faith and science are not mutually exclusive and that they may even work together.

How so? Einstien and La Maitre weren't even of the same religion.

If you want to honour Lemaitre, bringing up faith and science is a very bad idea. He himself has stressed many times that his scientific theory shouldn´t be associated (or even mentioned in the same sentence) with the catholic notion of creation. Lemaitre was a Jesuit, and a Belgian one at that. Belgian and Dutch Jesuits teach the allegorical interpretation of the bible, which is perfectly legitimate within catholic dogma.

When Pope Pius XII publically expressed approval for Lemaitre's theory, Lemaitre wrote a letter to Pope saying that the Bible and theoretical physics have nothing to do with each other. Lemaitre was extremely touchy about anyone thinking his physics was in anyway influenced by his religious beliefs. Lemaitre was a pro.

In effect he told the Pope: "Cool it, Your Eminence"

But many consider Catholics as enemies of science.
