Not sure why I'm being this particular flavor of nostalgic, but I just got hit with a wave of it. I miss trade wars and barren realms elite and kyrandia, and also being young. That was nice too.

any old schoolers in here?

BBS is still running strong in Taiwan, I use it myself. Here's something you might like.
BBS GOOGLE TERMINAL

Many of these games can still be played over telnet servers, or even JAVA applications. You simply have to search for them.

teehee, that google terminal amused me quite a lot =)

and I know they're available - played trade wars a while ago - but somewhere along the line I stopped playing (right around when they got 'real' graphics, I think) and losing myself in games just doesn't work anymore =/

Mostly just a 'I miss this...' as opposed to a 'Where can I find...'

Hear, hear! I almost feel nostalgic for having to dial a BBS number over and over until it finally connects. My DOS-based comm program would then trigger my sound card to play a short tune very loudly so I could rush over and complete the connection before it timed out!

And I remember playing a live online game... Galactic Empires I think it was... so much furious typing and macros to fire phasors in the right direction to hit your opponents, both human and computer, and get those shields back up after each shot! :D

Yeah... those were the days. I'll hit you with something from back in the day... it was a small executable text-and-music ad for the Starport BBS.

AHAHAHA, you guys ROCK!

I am TERRIBLE with memorizing, but I totally remember the number to call the local newspaper's BBS - atdt4097228 ftw! lord, that was before ftw...

I learned so much back then! I never took up real programming because I could do anything I ever needed to do with BASIC, and once GUIs came around I could do everything I ever needed with macros...

Ooooh, I was so wrong before - I totally played the Incredible Machine on Windows 3.1, those graphics were AWESOME! THAT I think I'm going to have to go find, and I think I'm going to make it my mission to put that game on fifty old busted computers by the end of the year and put them in fifty different classrooms.

I've long since lost most of my early 'toys' - the trash-80 my mom sold at a garage sale still breaks my heart - but I do still have this:

Is that the T-1000? Quite the classic portable... meeeemorrrieeeeessss. :)

I kept most of my old sound cards for that kind of nostalgia. Fond, fond memories.

I keep most of my old everything because I'm a freak =P I think I have a tape drive around somewhere!

I lost a bunch of stuff during a really bad phase a couple years ago (my fault entirely) and one of my goals is to someday buy another AppleII (not E!) and the helicopter game =P

Time spent making one smile is never "wasted". ;)

That and the BBS days got my MIDI and AdLib ROL music spread around back in those days - far from a waste of time!

I remember BBS's from around the time I was in college. I can't say I miss them. I remember a lot of chat rooms that had a very limited number of people able to access them at the same time (like 2 or 4). I think mostly they were machines in someone's house, and the person had to have a phone line for each person who wanted to join the chat. Maybe I am wrong about that.

Much prefer today's Internet!
