The news here states someone accessed something sensitive related to nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is science... and, as far as I know, science is open. How could espionage be involved then? Or could this be about patents, as usual?

Well, based on the fact that the article mentions it being for a defense organization, they were more than likely trying to use nanotechnology to make a weapon or something. If you look at it that way, it makes perfect sense.
